Mozilla on Monday unveiled the second release candidate (RC) for Firefox 3.5.

Firefox 3.5 RC2 is the second release candidate the developers built, but it is the first time version 3.5 has been released for download directly from the Mozilla site. The first RC was made available last week to about 800,000 beta users late last week, and RC2 build on the feedback received from that release, Mozilla said.

This release of Firefox is the fastest version of the browser ever, according to Mozilla.

Other speed adjustments include JavaScript that runs up to three times faster than Firefox 3, and page load and manipulation that is two times faster than the previous version.

Firefox 3.5 RC2 also includes built-in video and audio playback via open technologies, location-based browsing, the ability to pull tabs out into separate windows, and an "undo close" window.

WTF? Ever since I opened that ExtremeTech link in RC1, FireFox has frozen itself and my computer off and on for up to 3 minutes at a time.

Next time just link to the Firefox download page.

In fact, it froze Firefox and corrupted the download of RC3 I was downloading. Yeah, RC3 apparently.

I've been using the beta/RC version, and I like it.

I tried Safari 4 and it is faster.

I've been using the RC's as well. And they're much better than 3.1 and the 3.5 beta. But it seems that every time I accidentally click the Help menu, no matter which 3.5 it is, it crashes.

If it weren't for session storing preventing me from ever losing anything, it would be an inconvenience. Right now it's just an annoyance.

In fact, I just reliably duplicated the crash on purpose.

I've reported it every time. Don't know if it'll be fixed soon, but as long as I never click Help (Which I rarely use anyway) I can avoid a crash.

Does this happen for anyone else? Just click Help and see if 3.5 crashes. If not, then it's probably something I have installed or an add-on.

No problem clicking the help menu on my system, I just used it to check for updates.

Looks like the final is out. It's on GetFirefox.com's front page instead of 3.1.

Downloading now! Thankfully all but one single add-on works with 3.5. (Stupid Text Area Resizer add-on. That feature should really be built into the damn browser!) Fortunately I have MR Tech to enable it anyway.

Oh, look. It was fixed in the final! Yay! Now I'll never know what was causing it.... unless it happens again.

Edit: False alarm. It's back. This reliable bug has now become unreliable.

I don't know what's missing, but this is what I would require:

Auto hiding status bar like Chrome.

All the tab features I get with Tab Mix Plus including reloading by double-clicking the tab, removing the X permanently, single-window mode that prevents the browser from ever spawning another window by absorbing all new windows as new tabs,

Session storing that stores EVERY tab I have open, as well as all their individual histories both back and forward as well as any text entered into forms so quitting and restarting the app is like never quitting at all. Also crash recovery that restores everything.

Stylish for custom stylesheets on a per page basis without putting it all in userContent.css. Stylish also allows customization of the GUI.

NoScript. (I hate AdBlock. NoScript works better for me.)

CyberSearch, it's pretty much like Inquisitor, but it's in your location bar (BTW, another major need would be the ability to REMOVE the search box.) and does all searching, address loading, everything right from one place. Searches my history and bookmarks as well.

Long URL Please turns TinyURL into their original URL right in the browser.

DownloadHelper for downloading Flash video sources. (Sadly not DRM ones like Hulu)

DownloadThemAll for downloading all linked images in a page.

FireGestures. (At least until xGestures is updated for Snow Leopard)

Sxipper for form filling and learning. Nothing comes close. Not even built-in keychains.

Tab Wheel Scroll for paging through tabs by scrolling the wheel.

Download Statusbar instead of a separate window for downloads. It's a bar that appears in the browser displaying the progress. I hate separate windows for stuff like that!

I have too much invested into Firefox. And much of this stuff will never be possible in Safari just because of how it's programmed. GUI-wise.

Ok, Glimmer Blocker seems an imperfect cross between the two.

CyberSearch, it's pretty much like Inquisitor, but it's in your location bar

GlimmerBlocker allows search in the address bar. It doesn't have the cool bells and whistles though Glims and Inquisitor have though.

You'd be surprised what clicking "Other Forms" does. Especially with a certain Saft option. Still I'll try it.

Saft is shareware and seems break every Safari upgrade.

Glims and Saft sometimes conflict so the maker of Glims is trying to make it so Saft is unnecessary. However it is a work in progress

See, there's the problem. It's not supported by Apple and they break it every chance they can get. I can't afford to have to put up with random outages. It just won't happen any time soon. I'll stick with Firefox. I like being able to customize everything.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of Saft. It costs too much to break as often as it does. I like Glims a lot better. It only seems to break completely when there is a major Safari upgrade (like 3.x to 4). Beyond that, it is a work in process. When they add a feature, one of the other bells and whistles break and then they have to fix it.

I don't like the thought that one day all the features I am used to will just disappear, either for a few days while you wait for an update, or forever if Apple decides to completely cut it off one day.

Firefox 3.5 patch coming soon as Mozilla cranks up downloads
Pesky monkey still creating (some) havoc

Mozilla Foundation notched up five million downloads in the first 24 hours after it released Firefox 3.5 earlier this week.

The open source browser maker also confirmed it would be bringing out version 3.5.1 soon to squash bugs its development team hadn’t managed to eradicate ahead of the launch.

Mozilla’s security patch is expected to rock up in the next few weeks. It will kill at least three bugs and “topcrashes” that remain present in the latest iteration of the popular Internet Explorer rival.

"[The] goal of this release should be a quick turnaround that fixes topcrashes and bugs we almost held ship for," said Mozilla earlier this week in its status meeting notes.

One of those fixes includes a patch for TraceMonkey, the outfit’s speedy JavaScript engine.
