Odd, I've been looking in British and Irish papers and not finding the story.

To be fair, the NPR report was a followup. The report was released in May.
Irish church knew abuse 'endemic'
Curiously, it's described as controversial by Fox News: Ireland Releases Controversial Report on Church Abuse. I suppose it is, though the NPR report makes it seem as if the controversy is over whether the priests should be keelhauled or flogged.

Oh, so the story is an investigation into previously known abuse, not new revelations of abuse.
Though the details will no doubt be horrific.

Then Jesus kissed the boy's bruised flesh, and restored life into him. Praise be to god, the disciples cried, and the assistants then brought out a young girl who quivered with every step.

This is turning awesome.
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Well you're wrong. You, a Jew, do not think ANYTHING in the New Testament is convincing, so it is completely meaningless for you to sit there stroking your chin and commenting on the believability of any particular part.

Wow, you've got such amazing insight into my spiritual beliefs.
I know you hate it when anyone but Catholics comments on Catholic doctrine. But it's really dumb; you need to lose this defensiveness.
Following your logic you can't criticize what some Republican governor does in a different state than your own; or policy of some distant country.

Your idea was "nuh-uh".
If you'd supported that with anything, my response may have been different.
But you didn't.
I don't hate it when anyone but Catholics comments on Catholic doctrine. I hate it when someone who doesn't show that they have any idea what they're talking about makes unsupported blanket statements.
If you'd like to say why you disagree with the basis that the Christian churches who have exorcism support that doctrine with, we can try this again. But if you've nothing but "nope" then it's not a meaningful expression of an idea.

Yeah, you can take the Pope out of the Nazis, but... yeah. I hope Benedict XVI's reign is short. But any hope of the Vatican moving into the 21st century are slim.
In any case, we have enough scientific knowledge to know that traits such as sexual orientation are not the work of demons. In fact, we can be pretty certain that demons don't exist at all. I'm not sure why I should have to walk on eggshells and call that nonsense nonsense. If someone were to proclaim a belief in unicorns or Ra, I could say that was nonsense and nobody would care.
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Re: AT LAST!!! A cure for gayness!
I was baptized, first communioned, grades 1-3 educated and at twelve years of age confirmed as a soldier of/for the New Testament Superstar. This was in the early to mid-1960's. I recall the Latin rite as normal, for instance. And attended more than one High Mass. Incense in the air, the whole deal.
I decided abit prior to confirmation Catholocism as a whole was pretty akin to voodoo. However, some folks give that particular sect a fair amount of credence too. So, there you go.
These days, I'm more aligned with the Patti Smith view on the subject. I can honestly say that the only sect I've felt at home in is Deadheads. I think I've seen more Dead shows over the last 30 years than been to a Catholic mass. And felt much better about myself and the human condition at large. fwiw.
My outlook more agrees with the Star Wars 'Force' and 'Darkside' version of spirituality. I think the universe operates sorta like a giant recycling center. Energy isn't created nor destroyed, just changed in form.
Any religiion that demands celibacy among clergy is crazy; akin to not needing food water sleep air and other aspects of survival. Further, celibacy is asking for the 'abstinence/fondlers' observation made here earlier.

Also, I endorse the Annie Savoy view:
I believe in the Church of Baseball. I've tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones. I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I heard that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn't work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there's no guilt in baseball, and it's never boring... which makes it like sex. There's never been a ballplayer slept with me who didn't have the best year of his career. Making love is like hitting a baseball: you just gotta relax and concentrate. Besides, I'd never sleep with a player hitting under .250... not unless he had a lot of RBIs and was a great glove man up the middle. You see, there's a certain amount of life wisdom I give these boys. I can expand their minds. Sometimes when I've got a ballplayer alone, I'll just read Emily Dickinson or Walt Whitman to him, and the guys are so sweet, they always stay and listen. 'Course, a guy'll listen to anything if he thinks it's foreplay. I make them feel confident, and they make me feel safe, and pretty. 'Course, what I give them lasts a lifetime; what they give me lasts 142 games. Sometimes it seems like a bad trade. But bad trades are part of baseball - now who can forget Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas, for God's sake? It's a long season and you gotta trust. I've tried 'em all, I really have, and the only church that truly feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the Church of Baseball.
