Bizzare iTunes problem

I just got a new Macbook pro. I copied my iTunes music folder and library files to my new computer Everything seems to be working perfectly fine.

The problem arises when I try to delete a  It appears to work fine, then I get a message saying "Error 12001: Itunes library cannot be saved. an unknown error occurred." The songs do appear to be deleted. They are not in iTunes, and they appear in the trash, however, they do remain in my iTunes Music folder, even thought I told iTunes to remove them.

I thought it might be a permissions problem, but the permissions on everything look correct, and repairing permissions didn't help.

My one thought is that the user accounts on my old and new computers have the same name, so perhaps that's why the permissions appear to be correct even though they're not. Could that be it? How would I go about fixing that?

Also, possibly related but possibly not: iTunes occasionally disappears from the icons that appear when I press cmd-tab, even though I know it's open (there's music playing!) and the dock shows it to be open. wtf?

Thanks in advance for all your help

Re: Bizzare iTunes problem

Did you export the library from the older computer?
Did you use Migration Assistant to move the library?

Re: Bizzare iTunes problem

Make a duplicate copy of the iTunes library ---> on external disk.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean... I have a copy of the iTunes library on the external disk, but the one I'm using is now on the internal drive.

okay, that's what I wanted.   I'm distrustful of Apple's methods of importing data.   So, I wanted to make sure you had a copy that was separate from the internal hard drive.

Re: Bizzare iTunes problem

Okay, I tried the Migration Assistant, but it wasn't really helpful. All it does is transfer the files from my home folder on the old machine to the new machine, which doesn't get the music itself (on the external drive) and is basically what I already did myself.

I tried exporting the library as an XML file, but I can't find a way to import it into iTunes on my new computer. Unless I'm missing something...

I'm also having a problem with the Genius feature. Whenever it tries to gather information about my library, the progress bar gets stuck at the end indefinitely (I left it overnight and it was still there.)

Any other thoughts as to what it might be?

Re: Bizzare iTunes problem

Okay, I figured it out. iTunes on my old iMac was version 8.0, on the new macbook it was version 8.2. I upgraded the iMac and let the library there update, then transferred it again, and all appears to be well now
