Can't ANYONE use the "f" word?
Perez Hilton apologizes for calling will.i.am "smurf" after dustup at Toronto club
Hilton's apology, posted at perezhilton.com, came after the U.S.-based lobby group Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation condemned the openly gay blogger for calling will.i.am a "smurf" during an argument outside the King St. W. club Cobra around 3:30 a.m. Monday that ended, allegedly, with Hilton being punched several times by the Peas' tour manager.
"I wanted to hurt (will.i.am) with the word I chose, not anyone else. Unfortunately, the one who got hurt was me and, subsequently, a lot of other people," Perez wrote.
"Clearly, I am not homophobic. Also, I am not nor have I ever claimed to be a spokesperson for the gay community. I am just speaking for myself, a gay man."
Earlier in the day, after GLAAD said Hilton's use of the "vulgar anti-gay slurs that feed a climate of hatred and intolerance toward our community", Perez had refused to apologize and said he was hurt that GLAAD, which he said he once worked for, would turn on him, a victim of violence.
Hard to call the guy homophobic, but I guess the idea is to not let that word become socially acceptable again. Or something.
Hello? Anybody care?

Re: Can't ANYONE use the "f" word?
I used to use the f-word when I was younger but only in private with fellow cock suckers. In the late 80's/early 90's this was done in anti-assimilationist circles to rile up the Stepford Gays.
Otherwise I've not paid any attention to the story.

Sounds like Perez got what was coming to him.

I can't believe Perez did that.
Should have just referred to him as a dumb bitch - like he did with Miss California.
Then no apology would be necessary.

At work I generally refer to/address the Swiss machines as "commie fags", at least in casual conversation. In more formal discussions I use their full given names, "hateful commie smurf - I'm a racist cow -". Does that count?

I know I'm out of touch on this issue but a while back I saw a couple of guys from a group called Queer Nation giving an interview. They wanted the terms queer and fag to be used and accepted, my question is - Are queer and smurf derogatory terms or acceptable terms? No hidden agenda here, just wondering.

Is smurf a derogatory term or acceptable term?
Same answer.
Depends on who says it and how it's used.

Queer is a lot more socially acceptable than smurf. I don't think we'll see a 'Fagotty eye for the straight guy' show anytime soon.

Re: Can't ANYONE use the "f" word?
Keep in mind that within the gay world there's a left/right continuum in terms of anti-assimilationists and assimilationists, and Queer Nation would be to the left, not even left of center -- any civil rights movement has such elements. But the word "queer" is widely used -- think Queer Studies in terms of college course offerings.
So I'd not take one small group's word in an interview to mean much basically. You'd think looking up the group on wikipedia would be enough to show you this.

For example, if we were to burn you at the stake, we'd probably pile faggots around you, then light them on fire.

A friend of ours dated a guy (who our friend nicknamed "J.R. Liberace" as dual homage to J.R. from "Dallas" and the famed pianist -he had a chandelier in the bathroom, no joke).
Anyway, J.R. always referred to cigarettes as "fags".
Probably to get a rise out of people.
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.

Still common slang in the UK. Used to be here too.

Yes, but he used it as an insult to a non-gay. I guess that makes it horrible, like if a black man called a white man "smurf." Oh, wait, that happens all the time, so I guess it's not like that.
Apparently the Fs and the Ns have different ideas about what is offensive and what isn't.

Hilton is getting negative attention and resentment from parts of the Gay community because he's acting like the self-proclaimed King of Teh Gays.
As far as I know, Elton John is still very much alive.

Actually, fags, in refrence to cigarettes is a predominantly British English slang, and was prevelant in the U.S. in the 40's and 50's, lasting up through the 60's.
