Iraq to US: "thanks for getting the hell out, guys!"

Fireworks over Baghdad as Iraqis celebrate taking over cities from US authorities

Fireworks, not bombings, colored the Baghdad skyline late Monday, and thousands attended a party in a park where singers performed patriotic songs. Loudspeakers at police stations and military checkpoints played recordings of similar tunes throughout the day, as Iraqi military vehicles decorated with flowers and national flags patrolled the capital.

"All of us are happy — Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds on this day," Waleed al-Bahadili said as he celebrated at the park. "The Americans harmed and insulted us too much."

Al-Maliki declared a public holiday and proclaimed June 30 as "National Sovereignty Day."

Cheney must be rolling over in his grave!

Anyone know where that banner went?

Wait... Why didn't they do all those things when we liberated them?

I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

Well, now we're liberating them from us.

Re: Iraq to US: "thanks for getting the hell out, guys!"

By the way, Dick Cheney fears the worst

Mr. Cheney told The Washington Times' "America's Morning News" radio show that he is a strong believer in Gen. Ray Odierno, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, and that the general is doing what needs to be done.

"But what he says concerns me: That there is still a continuing problem. One might speculate that insurgents are waiting as soon as they get an opportunity to launch more attacks."

More than 250 people have died in Iraq during the past week in attacks and bombings, which appear designed to shake the government's confidence and reignite sectarian fighting.

Of course one might use his reasoning to keep US troops in Iraq for the next 400 years.

It's a major accomplishment.

I think you have rather biased interpretation of the celebration.

Not really.  He suggested Dick Cheney would be troubled by all of this.  Guess what...

I hate to say it, but I think Cheney is right. We haven't seen an end to violence or to insurgency in Iraq. They have many ugly, violent years in front of them.

I'm glad we're finally leaving, though.

He's wrong about the proper solution for it.

A soldier who calls Wilmington home has died in Iraq, according to the Associated Press.

A flag-draped coffin carrying the body of Staff Sgt. Edward C. Kramer arrived at Dover Air Force Base Wednesday.

There’s little information available about Kramer, who is identified by the AP only as a Wilmington resident and member of the U.S. Army. It’s unclear what unit Kramer belonged to or how and when he died.

I'm torn between feeling that Iraq is, morally speaking, America's responsibility, with the US doing whatever it takes to make Iraq stable and progressive; and feeling like the whole goddamned invasion has been a bloody shambles that needs to be ended as quickly as possible.

I like to think that both of these go hand in hand. It's a shambles best ended by American's departure.

Once everything sorts itself out, after a few years of bloody infighting Iraq will emerge as another pseudo-democracy like Iran.
The notion that there is any hunger for a western style, secular democracy there is just a childish fantasy.

After his capture, Saddam Hussein told the FBI that he falsely allowed the world to believe Iraq had weapons of mass destruction because he feared revealing his weakness to Iran, the hostile neighbor he considered a bigger threat than the U.S.

Saddam also dismissed Osama bin Laden as a "zealot," said he had never personally met the al-Qaida leader and that the Iraqi government didn't cooperate with the terrorist group against the U.S., according to FBI interview notes made public by the National Security Archive, a non-governmental research institute.

Final fireworks for four:
http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/2 … ty-patrols

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced the 39-year-old Kramer, a former Wilmington firefighter and veteran of two wars, was one of four soldiers killed in Iraq this week.

Kramer and three others died from wounds sustained Monday night when an improvised explosive device detonated in Baghdad, near the humvee they were riding in, according to a statement from the defense department. It was the last day of regular combat operations for U.S. forces in Iraqi cities.

This is the North Carolina National Guard’s largest single combat loss since World War II, said Maj. Matthew Handley a North Carolina National Guard spokesman. The deaths bring to 15 the total number of North Carolina National Guard soldiers killed in action since Sept. 11, 2001.

Meanwhile, on the distaff side:

Kirsten Holmstedt sat at her keyboard and cried. She couldn’t write a word.

MEET THE AUTHOR
Wilmington author Kirsten Holmstedt will sign copies of her new book, “The Girls Come Marching Home,” at 2 p.m. July 19 at Wilmington’s Barnes & Noble in the Mayfaire Town Center. For information, call 509-1880.

She was working on the story of CJ Robison, a master sergeant with Iowa’s Army National Guard. “Her blood runs [Army] green,” Holmstedt said. “This woman loves her country.”
