move sim card BACK to old iphone to reset phone?

Sorry if this has been asked but couldn't find it.

Wife had original iPhone. We just upgraded to the 3G. I followed this process:

1) Backed up old phone in iTunes
2) Swapped the sim cards between old and new phone
3) hooked up new phone to computer with iTunes
4) activated phone and restored from the backup from old phone
5) all works fine...all contacts, songs, settings, etc from old phone are on new phone and phone works.

I now want to delete all the data from the old phone. I probably should have done this before moving the sim to the new phone but I was worried about losing stuff if something went wrong. Now the old phone won't go beyond the "you need to activate" with the "new" sim card from the new phone.

QUESTION: Can I move the working sim card back to the old phone, and erase all the data, then move the sim back to the new phone? Will this goof up my service?

Or other thoughts on how to delete the data from the old phone at this point?

Thanks!

You have answered a question someone else had about moving a SIM between iPhones. I don't know that anyone here knows the answer to your question. Did you query Apple or their Knowledge Base yet?

I didn't do any SIM card swapping. Why did you do that? My instructions specifically said not to. Now my old original iPhone still does everything but make calls. It's basically just an iPod Touch now. I'm selling it to a friend so I just plugged it in, opened iTunes, clicked restore and when it asked "Restore from backup?" I said "No." Seems like you should be able to do that even if you're getting that activation warning.

Re: move sim card BACK to old iphone to reset phone?

Well, I swapped the SIM card because I didn't know I wasn't supposed to. No instructions came with the thing.

I realize now I didn't write the order correctly...I forgot a detail.

1) Backed up old phone
2) Plugged in new phone (which still had the sim card that came with it inside)
3) Started activation process in iTunes and answered the questions about it replacing the old phone and to restore from the backup of the old phone
4) All seemed to work (all settings and data were transferred) but couldn't make calls
5) Out of curiosity THEN switched the SIM cards and presto, I had phone service.

So THAT's why I switched them and left them that way. All still seems to be working.

To answer my original question, though, on how to delete the data from the old phone, I noticed when I connected it with iTunes and it asked to activate, I had an option to Cancel that screen. I did so and then boom I had access to all the data on the phone again...I then clicked "restore" and cleaned off the phone.

To make sure it worked I did the same thing and this time it gave me no other option than to activate the phone. At least I hope this cleaned off the phone!
