Any dog people here?

Silly question I know with all the "post your pets pics" thread we've had.  I need a bit of advice handling my dog, well actually finding a new training tool.  I'll try to keep it short and to the point.

1. Bullet is a 100 pound border collie / blue healer / who knows what.  We walk on a daily basis with play stops in one of the parks so he gets lots of exercise.

2. About 3 years ago we gave up the gentle leader for a choke collar to help break Bullet of some of his bad habits.  For the most part he is better.  He stays at my side instead of in front of me, he stopped yelping when passing other dogs, and he doesn't chase small critters, just other cats and dogs.

3. 6 months ago I got the news I was pregnant and having a 100 pound dog lunge after another dog would only hurt the baby and could cause a miscarriage so I went back to the gl due to the fact it appeared easier to control him and I didn't have to give the short sharp jerks that are needed for the choke to work properly

4.  Today marks the 3rd time the gl has popped off when trying to correct Bullet and get him into a sit before he took after a dog or cat.  The 3rd time I had to chase him down because he was to busy playing to listen to me.  I'm giving up on the gl  or at least this one.  Never had this trouble before, so maybe it's just defective

What I need from you is advice on a training device, or a way to walk Bullet that prevents lunging and won't fall off.  He is a very strong dog and he KNOWS it.  He is not afraid to use his weight to get his way.  Now he is use to the gl coming off I think he tries to get it to pop off on purpose (to smart for his own good)

I also need advice on how to train him to NOT lunge, or chase after other animals.  I need to get his attention and keep it before he even lunges or becomes obsessed with the other animal.  Trouble is, he sees them before I do I just go by watching his moves but I don't always catch him in time.

Books, DVD's, personal opinions on training are all welcome.

Re: Any dog people here?

If you need to train him to be more obediant pick up an obedince book

if you simply want a better leash system:

get him a real harness like one of these

My GSD has never been able to slip out of it and it is very easy to control him when he has it on.

Re: Any dog people here?

Yes I have used a shock collar in the past borrowed it from my neighbor and it works great, but right now don't have the money to get one.  I was hoping to return the gl which keeps falling off for something more stable.  I've heard about the harness before I may give it a try if for nothing else to keep him from lunging.  Training may have to wait until after the baby comes so i don't get hurt

Meantime I see if the trainer is at the store and get their opinion on a book or something.

Re: Any dog people here?

Get a prong collar.

Yes, I mean one of those evil looking collars with the spiky things that poke into the dogs neck under tension. Contrary to appearances these collars are actually more gentle to a dogs neck than a choke chain.
The prongs will not stab your dog but will produce enough discomfort so your dog should quickly learn to walk with a loose lead.
