Re: RUMOR: CNN apparently saying that Palin will resign

Slate offers ten theories for Palin's quitting (note: original item has lots of links)

1) She's running for president; 2) She's undergoing fame withdrawal and plans to get more attention in the lower 48; 3) She wants to cash in ($); 4) There's another shoe about to drop; 5) She'll now run against Murkowski for Senate. 6) She needs to tend to her family. 7) She's bonkers. 8) She's preggers. 9) She wants to "effect positive change outside government at this point in time on another scale and actually make a difference for our priorities." 10) Actually being a governor in a recession is no fun. Gives you ulcers. ... These theories are not necessarily mutually exclusive. ...

It's also worth quoting pal Krauthammer on this: "Most unexpected, and I would say erratic, political announcement since [McCain suspended his campaign]."

Re: RUMOR: CNN apparently saying that Palin will resign

I would say this exceeds McCain suspending his campaign.

It's really, really strange. The Vanity Fair thing last week made her out to be a megalomaniac, so if she actually plans to stay more low key, that would be shocking.

I would have to say the most likely things are fame withdrawal, or family issues, with an overarching craziness.

My suspicion is her daughter got pregnant again and had an abortion.
Just a weird feeling I have. I've not seen anything in particular to indicate it, and maybe we'll never know.

Her speech today was painful in it's rambling. What a scatter-brained, empty-headed, annoying dullard.

What is it with republicans giving painful rambling speeches lately.

Time's take on it

I think this is the money quote:

"This is classic Sarah Palin, the mixture of the personal and political," says Michael Carey, an Anchorage talk show host. "It's all done ad hoc. There's no strategic plan. It's, 'This is what I'm going to do, baby. Here we go,' " Carey said in a phone interview.

Not really.

If she truly is pro life, and not just using it as political pandering, her daughter having an abortion would result in extreme emotional distress. Would you want the stresses of office if your child chose to murder someone? Would you even feel qualified to have a leadership position if you couldn't even keep your family in the moral up and up?

Well politically it would certainly be disastrous. She'd pretty much have to choose between her daughter and her career.

I'm not sure, however, why it would mean she'd have to resign now and not six months from now.

Because she's human and losing a grandchild is extremely traumatic, even more so when it was your kin that had the grandchild killed.

Also, the odds of it being kept quiet are greater if she leaves the political limelight.

There are jerks who like to dig up personal information about politicians they don't like just to spite them. Leaving politics may allow it to blow over so that when she re-enters politics, it isn't a big issue, and even can be used to get sympathy support, IE -

"My family was falling apart so I needed to leave to do damage control in the home first and get things back together, family always comes first with me, now that the terrible issues are behind us, vote for me because I can see Venus and Jupiter from my house!"

What if, instead of murdering someone, her daughter had a tiny clump of non-self-aware cells scrapped from the wall of her uterous? Would that be any different?

Oh, here we go.

For the record, I don't think that res is making the argument here that abortion is murder. He's saying that if Palin is genuinely pro-life, then she believes abortion is murder and will act accordingly. Thus, her pro-life beliefs could be her reason for stepping down. That's all.

I have a hard time believing that Palin holds any strong personal values. Everything about her reeks of cynical positioning to appeal to an interest group.

Re: RUMOR: CNN apparently saying that Palin will resign

I assume that given the recent Vanity Fair article and the upcoming tell-all books about to hit stores, someone convinced her that her political aspirations were a pipe dream and that she should cash in her chips while they were still worth money. In other words, the main stream media finally kicked her ass.

On a side note, here's a winning quote from the FREEP forums:

Guerrilla warfare. She appears when she wishes, where she chooses, unshackled from the restraints incumbent on a governor, and the Left suddenly faces an enemy that attacks from nowhere, from the shadows, again, and again, and again. She begins the process of political payback.

Financially, she has adoring fans nationwide. She is a draw. These fans, loving her and having concern for her welfare, place money in the collection tray and not only wipe out the $500,000 debt, but begin building, bit by bit, a pretty substantial warchest.

Organizationally, she shuns conventional wisdom and instead goes outside the system. Remember Obama during the Primaries? You get the idea. She begins appearing at strategically-selected Tea Parties, and not only gets exposure herself (if she does this early), but awakens America from its slumber as it sees angry, energized, fired-up fellow Americans growing something BIG. "What is that? What is bothering them? Should I be concerned? Better yet, maybe I should be involved!"

You see how this works?

Re: RUMOR: CNN apparently saying that Palin will resign

Leaving because of family? Like having five kids isn't enough? One of them being an infant isn't enough? That infant having special needs isn't enough? Or having another kid who just became a parent herself isn't enough? I was surprised that a "family values" conservative would run for elected office, much less VP, given that family situation. I certainly wouldn't and I'm a crazy liberal 'mo.

Perhaps trying to deal with everything going on in her family and being governor and trying to help the conservative base of the GOP was simply too much. Perhaps she didn't care for all the media scrutiny. Or maybe there's something we just don't know about yet (not necessarily an abortion). As for jerks digging up info on politicians they don't like, the right-wingers do it better than just about anyone.
