Mac|Live: iPod games and Mac games
As you've all been raving about Peggle on the podcast, I went looking for a free Flash version I could play on my Mac. I couldn't find one, but I did find a clone called Star Beacons on a site called Kongregate. Kongregate's founders bill it as the "YouTube of videogames" They have over 16,000 Flash games available!
Also, I notice there are a few commercial download services for Mac Games, notably Big Fish Games and Mac Games Arcade I found out about Mac Games Arcade when I saw a promo for Pangea games (The makers of Nanosaur and Cro-Mag Rally). Sadly, Pangea announced they were ending development of Macintosh games in favor of iPhone.
I guess the message is that the App Store is superseding more traditional forms of software distribution. Or perhaps that 99ยข games are more attractive that $19.99 games, which is what Peggle Deluxe costs at MacGameStore.com .
Do you think the App store will start selling Mac games software? Do you think these commercial services can be as seamless as the App store? (Rhetorical questions, BTW)

Yeah, Kongregate is pretty cool. In the August issue, we review Spewer, a Flash game on that site.
But in my humble opinion, no so-called Peggle clone will ever touch the majesty that is Peggle (and Peggle Nights, which is even better). I love it. Plus, the original Peggle is $9.95 at the moment. (Edit: Oh snap so is Peggle Nights.) Your mileage may vary, of course.
I don't see Mac games coming to the App Store, no. There's just no incentive for Apple to do that. Digital distribution is here to stay (also see gametreeonline.com) but I'd be shocked if it's a game Apple wants to get into. Games will never sell Macs, but the iPhone/iTouch apps (including games) and the ease of buying them sure do make that platform attractive.
