Re: Build your own Air Conditioner!

This thread is funny. You guys are as good at dealing with the heat as you are with bushfires!

Australian tips for keeping cool on a hot day.
Make sure all the windows are closed at around 5am. Do not be tempted to open them till late in the afternoon when the temperature starts to drop.
Do not cook with an oven or stove and don't leave your PC on. Anything that generates heat, avoid it.
Keep your curtains closed on the sunny side of the house.
If you can, isolate the rooms on the sunny side from the rest of the house by closing doors.

Asuming your house has got a reasonble level of insulation, this will be more than enough to be confortable on a 110°F day without an airconditioner.

Re: Build your own Air Conditioner!

I did that once in my dorm room a while back.  I "borrowed" a large trash can, filled it with ice from the ice machine and filled it up with water.  I then ran it through copper tubing over a fan and out the window.  It didn't work well enough to justify constantly wasting all that water and ice.

Re: Build your own Air Conditioner!

Ooooh, my own zombie thread, resurrected once again!  That's right my pretty, you have another chance at LIFE!!!

This year, I still have the fan with the copper coil attached to it.  However, it's not hooked up to a bucket of ice water.

To the newbie who want to build that complicated dehumidifier project, I suggest calling a pro, or at least going to Sears or Home Depot to buy a REAL dehumidifier.

Re: Build your own Air Conditioner!

How about a Ammonia AC?  Like a refrigerator in a RV, you would heat ammonia which when it condenses it would cool your house.   The way you heat the ammonia would be with a solar collector. Using the sun would surely save on that electric bill.  Ammonia is 10 to 15 percent more efficient than freon. It is environmentally friendly. I know it is toxic but it is is about half the weight of air so a tall vent pipe could vent any leak up high to disperse. Also you can chill water to store in a tank for night cooling and to keep from piping the ammonia into the house.

So...

You'd have a pipe venting ammonia out of your house? Your neighbors would probably think you had a meth lab!

Bren, it's a zombie thread from '06. You don't have to post in everything.

Re: Build your own Air Conditioner!

Well yes, I do see that the most recent reply is from somebody with a one post count, but their reply doesn't appear to be SPAM. Or am I missing something? Is that reply from some sort of posting bot? If so, what on Earth could be the motivation? Seriously, I'm curious about this. Please do explain it if you know the answer.

Re: Build your own Air Conditioner!

Yes, I understand that it's a zombie thread. I am not disputing that fact. My question is, what is the reason for a zombie thread to be resurrected? Assuming the person with a one post count who resurrected it had something to gain by doing this, what is the benefit to them?

That's what I'm asking.

I tried asking Google, but only got results related to Linux processes and the walking dead.
