iPhone reception issues
My iphone 3g is acting up and I am not sure if it is fate pushing me towards 3GS or Apple's self destruct codes for old devices when new ones are introduced to the wild lol
I was having reception issues for a little bit before 3.0 so I took it to the Apple Store and they said that my dropped calls were on Par with the AT&T network and that my phone was pretty much ok (that's sad considering that I was dropping enough calls to make a genius appt in the first place that "it's just my service provider")
They suggest I do a restore of my phone before I do the 3.0 update. I do that, I backup and then restore from the backup and then do 3.0. Everything was fine for a bit and then bam I am having problems again.
Next option is a full restore NOT from backup. I know my contacts and apps etc will be ok with syncing but I save my txt msgs and I do not see a way to save my received msgs to the HDD of my Mac.
Any other suggestions other than copying and pasting to the notes and saving it that way...WAY 2 TIME CONSUMING lol

Re: iPhone reception issues
The AT&T support forum suggests that I do a clean restore not from backup for 3.0. I am leery about anything from that side of the fence since they royally screwed the pooch on the whole 3.0 MMS/Tethering thing I doubt they could program the clock on a VCR let alone do anything to my baby lol
IF I need to do this clean restore then is there anyway for me to save my TXT msgs quickly and efficently (not copy and paste to notes like I have seen a few places as well as the AT&T forum.

I'm not much of a texter myself.
I think you can call up applecare and ask. This is an important question. Tell them that their Support pages didn't help show what is saved during a backup.

Re: iPhone reception issues
You could try restoring fresh and if that doesn't work you can go back and restore from the backup. No point in copying and pasting text messages and rebuilding stuff if it's not going to work anyway.

Re: iPhone reception issues
thanks guys,
I ended up finding a slight work around that allowed me to forward the text msgs in bulk to my IM name as another text messgae. So that sent an IM to my desktop and I saved it all into word. Bless AIM lol
I went to AT&T yesterday and waited online to get my service looked at. They told me that a ton of people were having the same issues I was but they tried to blame it on 3.0 instead their lame service. They gave me a new SIM card and sent like 2 updates to it. I am still having spotty reception and trouble talking to helio customers specifically.
I live in Orlando and their coverage map shows full 3G support for the entire state so I'm not sure what the issue is aside from AT&T being a big ball of suck.

Re: iPhone reception issues
I'm not that impressed with AT&T and I'm having the same issues you are. I live in an area where AT&T's coverage is horrible. I had this same problem with my original iPhone (2G?). Apple and AT&T were pointing fingers at each other. They had me do restores, replace the SIM card and so on... The problem was cured when version 2.0 was released. When I loaded version 3.0 on my 3G, the exact same reception issues came back - dropped calls and crappy reception. Now I have a 3Gs and it has the same issues. I'm hoping version 3.1 clears up this reception issue...

Re: iPhone reception issues
It's a total crapshoot. You can forget the coverage maps because they're never accurate down to specific addresses and no matter where you go there's always going to be one provider better than another.
My old verizon phone sucked in my house, at work, and in my regular bar. My wife's worked OK with usually 1 or 2 bars. I switched to AT&T for the iPhone and it worked slightly better than my wife's. When she switched to ATT a few months ago her new phone had almost full bars everywhere. I was jealous until I got my 3GS and now I'm getting 5 bars everywhere. Crapshoot.

Re: iPhone reception issues
Is your coverage only crappy indoors? I have that problem. GSM is terrible at penetrating certain substances. If you live in a building with stucco, reinforced concrete or metal, you won't get very good reception. I have problems at home and other buildings. I step outside my building and get full bars and 3G. Inside I get maybe one or two bars and no data. I've missed several calls and can't get visual voicemail messages until I go outside, connect to the data network (messages won't download over WiFi) and then return calls outside. Friends in our building put their iPhones next to the window and use BT headsets. Most everywhere else I go around the Bay Area I get good coverage. I hope GSM gets dropped when they roll out LTE.
But alas, help is on the way.
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Re: iPhone reception issues
Yeah. Almost all buildings here are built in cement or reinforced concrete. Still I get full bars almost anywhere except in my parents office or when we are out at sea near 12 miles from the coast. That is where I lose all contact with the rest. Having been out there this past week, mostly fishing, I had 15 new texts, 20 new emails and near 30 missed calls.

Re: iPhone reception issues
It's not that hard to saturate an island of 3,515 sq miles (land) with cell service. We have only 2 states smaller than that. And Ohio for instances, the 34th largest state, has over 10 times the land area. Most of the metro areas and major highways have good service if not perfect, but suburbs and rural areas are screwed by ATT.

Re: iPhone reception issues
You mean 12 miles from the nearest cell tower and you got no reception? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you.
ATT should put more floating cell towers on the oceans!

I literally mean near 12 miles from the coast on a jet ski or boat.

what sturner is talking about is that there aren't cell towers in the ocean.

Re: iPhone reception issues
I know that. Was actually gonna comment about his zarcasm. But 12 miles is a rather short distance. Though they do become longer when you actually have to swim them.
