Don't reply to spam

Report it, it will be dealt with. But please stop replying to spam threads. You're only encouraging them.

Re: Don't reply to spam

I have been pointing out spam in a normal reply because I didn't want to get in the middle of "should I report it or not"
http://www.maclife.com/forums/topic/108778

So apparently what I have been doing was wrong.
In order to play by the rules...

Where is the line drawn? Are we allowed to respond when joe mac developer comes in and post his shareware? What if he just wants feed back. What if a post seems legit, but it has a link to another site as their "website" or in their sig? What if the spam is in a non spam thread are we allowed to continue? I assume if we are we aren't allowed to comment about the spam regardless of how funny it was?

Next question...

Are we supposed to report the spam or not.
We have mods on here telling us not to report it and we have mods on here telling us to report it.

Which way is it?

I think I have just about worn out the report button on my browser on those "Convert DVD" spam messages.

Re: Don't reply to spam

Often times, spammers will come in and bump an old thread just so they can spam with their links. They usually only have one post. Then there are the ones that start multiple threads   of the same thing in different forums. Sometimes they respond to existing new or old threads with what seems to be a normal answer but are spamming with links.

If it's an old thread that was bumped by a new registered member, don't reply. If you aren't sure, just hit the report button.

Re: Don't reply to spam

Okay, to clarify:

If spam lingers around for, say, a couple of days, chances are we missed it. By all means: report it. But if it's only just been posted: trust us; we'll spot it and take care of it.

Is that clear enough? Can we all live with this rule-of-thumb?

But what if you were blinded by the sexual undertones of the spam and we didn't know because you were too blinded to delete it?

Re: Don't reply to spam

Okay, some people apparently consider themselves more equal than others.

I have stated many times the request to stop replying to spam. It makes my job to keep these forums spam-free harder and more annoying, and that part of it is alread the least fun.

So, here's the deal: starting after today's round of mopping up spam, anyone found replying to a spam message will be banned for a week. Since replying to spam is henceforth considered postcount-stuffing, they'll also have their postcount halved. Repeat offenders will be banned for twice the length of time, each time.

Re: Don't reply to spam

I had no idea this discussion was even going on until just now--it's possible many don't realize that you guys don't want them replying to spam threads.

Are we allowed creating a new thread to discuss a recently posted funny spam?

I got notified of my booboo but replied to two spam messages - hopefully my second reply doesn't ban me.
I won't do it again.

That should be permissible, though I would caution against including any links.

Halved? That's no punishment for him. You have to remove at least 1 digit (thus: from 10,000 to 1,000).
