UT series going on hiatus
Not exactly a stunner...
Unreal Tournament's Retail Break Jul 24, 2009, 6:14 pm ET
Epic Not To Release A New Unreal Tournament “For Several Years” on G4tv.com is a video interview with the CEO of Epic Games where he says they are backing off from Unreal Tournament releases for "several years," though his statement is not as definitive as the story headline suggests, as he says they are "planning not to release a major retail game in the series for several years," which doesn't rule out digital distribution. He does say the series is "certainly a major long-term priority." Thanks Big Download.

Yay! I hate it when game devs go all Disney and release nothing but sequels of the same franchise. I hope they have some new stuff in the works.
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Didn't Bleszinski mention in an interview that he wanted to try something new? I mean, you can only look at so much purple (and brown, I guess if you count Gears).

I haven't played 3 or even the demo, but sales suggest some rethinking/reimagining should happen, yeah. Levi says it's fine, and I expect I'd enjoy it, but all that + fries? Maybe not. I'm looking forward to stretching into some new directions anyway.

I haven't read much from Cliffy lately. Last I read he was still all Gearsy, but he's done 2 already- #2 in just two years- and is committed to a third (that Marky R 'never heard of'), so I'd hope so.
Maybe the Gears movie?

Or something like Boll, since he likes costumes. Go to YouTube, search for Boll as Patton promoting the Postal movie.

The engine is the real deal. The game is just more of the same, twitch, shoot, and bunny hop.

Yeah, I think its a great game. It was the unfriendly interface, annoying steam integration, and buggy opening condition that killed it, not the content. But it really doesn't offer anything new gameplay-wise, it's just a refinement of the previous two games with fancy graphics (which I happen to think are completely praise-worthy). Compared to 2k4 its practically a trimming down.
It's still a fantastic editor and modding machine too. Totally worth the $9.95 its currently going for.

Re: UT series going on hiatus
3 wasn't bad, its better than the 2ks. But ya the interface blows chunks, its a very console friendly one vs what it should be for PC.
They should just rebox UT99 and they'd prolly rake in tons off it. They tried to be like Quake 3 when they didn't have to and it didn't work...they tried to be like Halo when they didn't have to and it didn't work. They just need to stop copying everyone. Its only appeasing the 5yr olds and that isn't the audience you want to keep. Building for people with short attention spans is never a good idea. GO BACK TO WHAT WORKS!!!
So what if the mags give a 99 remake a bad review cause its lacking vehicles/etc and all the "halo" frills and toony Quake 3 characters...would be willing to put hard $$$ down that if they did that, no matter what the review, it would sell.

2k4 was and still is my favourite. I still play it, and it has a bigger online community than UT3

Re: UT series going on hiatus
There are a number of posts on the Epic forums asking for Unreal and UT to be brought to the iPhone. I hope Epic considers it.
IMO UT's demise was from fracturing the community. UT99 one big happy family so to speak. Macs & PCs all playing together. Only difference was Mac folk didn't get the editor. Then the sequel. Either you like it or hated it. Fracture number one. Those who stuck with UT and those who moved on to 2K3/4. UT3 could've brought us back together but noooo! It has to be released to every platform under the sun, plus until the first patch way too many were having stability problems. Fracture two, three, four, five and six. Now you have PS3 owners bitching about not getting the same content as PCs. PC folks bitching that the GUI sucks and it's crashtastic and 360 owners bitching that they don't get content at all. Nice job Epic. If had made UT3 compatible cross platform it would be in a much stronger position.
NTM UT3 didn't bring much new to the table. Other than being bigger, badder and more bad ass.
Currently Epic is content with doing minor upgrades to their engine. In one interview Cliff mentioned the engine is at 3.2 or 3.17 or something or other and it's going to stay that way for awhile. If they're happy with just incrementals then I doubt we'll see another UT until engine 4. Which by the sounds is way off.
For me this makes sense. M$ wants a ten year life span on the 360, so does Sony on the PS3. So Epic has a few years before new hardware comes out that will make UE3 look old.

Eurogamer:...Anyway, how's CliffyB? Although he doesn't like being called that any more, does he?
Mark Rein: People took that completely out of proportion. He has fun with that whole public persona thing.
Eurogamer: Well yes, he has got a diamond earring and a Bon Jovi haircut.
Mark Rein: I do this because it's my job and Cliff does the whole public persona thing because he loves interfacing with the fans, being a personality; he's really good at it. He's a great face for the game business and I think he has fun with it. He doesn't care what you call him, just as long as you call him.
Eurogamer: Do you ever look at him and think, 'I, Mark Rein, would like to be a bit cooler? Perhaps I should get a gold chain and start calling myself Marky R?'
Marky R: No.
Eurogamer: Just going back to Gears of War 3, the tagline for the second game was, "Bigger, better, more badass." How can you top that? Have you reached the ultimate level of badass yet or is there room to grow?
Marky R: We're always getting better at what we do.
Eurogamer: Which is producing badass?
Marky R: Yeah. We can always get more badass.
Eurogamer: You're like a badass factory?
Marky R: We're a conglomerate of badassery.
Eurogamer: I can just picture CliffyB cranking the handle while you collect the badass pouring out of the machine.
Marky R: Yeah, I can picture that... I think whatever we do, we'll get better at it. Have you seen Shadow Complex? It's really good.
Eurogamer: Well, thank you very much for your time, Mark Rein -
Marky R: Oh, is that it? But we should just talk generally about our engine.
Eurogamer: Go on then. So how much is your engine?
Marky R: I said generally, not specifically.
Eurogamer: I've got about £3.97 on me, could I get one for that?
Marky R: This year at E3 we showed three really major features that showed how we're improving performance, visual quality and productivity as well as [at this point, Rein delivers a lengthy monologue about the benefits of Unreal Engine 3. For the sake of brevity, it can be summarised thus: 'The Unreal Engine's quite good, buy one.'] So the thing is I've started joking with people that if we had a minor numbering system for Unreal Engine 3, I think we'd be at 3.7 or 3.8 by now.
Eurogamer: Haha.
Marky R: It really is a very mature engine with a lot of great new functionality and improved performance every year.
Eurogamer: You sound like you're on the shopping channel, just so you know. I keep expecting you go to, 'Hurry, we've only got 42 Unreal Engines left!'
Marky R: I know. You'll condense that though, you're good at that.
Eurogamer: Yes, I'll probably transcribe it as, 'The Unreal Engine's quite good, just buy one.'
Marky R: But you'll remember I said it. 'Don't forget, Epic continues to improve their technology every year...'
Eurogamer: Actually I have that written on my bedroom wall. It's great to go to sleep knowing you're continuing to improve that technology on an annual basis.
Marky R: I guess that was kind of shlocky.
Eurogamer: What you need, to make the Unreal Engine more exciting, is a "bigger, better, more badass"-style tagline.
Marky R: Like, "Smaller, tighter, more badass."
Eurogamer: That sounds like an advert for some pornography.
Marky R: Yes, it sounds too much like a porn commercial.
Eurogamer: Perhaps we could have a competition where Eurogamer readers write in with suggestions?
Marky R: No, I don't think so. I've read the forums. No.

UT99 with fully updated graphics/models/textures but not a single thing changed in weapons/gameplay etc.... I'd buy that

I read it. Hence the play on words because it didn't work with UT3.

Sometimes, the temptation is too strong to pass up any oppo to quote (for the many who didn't read) something like

Since this comes up a lot lately, moreso with Natal and PS3 price cuts rumored/denied, I thought I'd mention.
I don't really buy it. Natal isn't a/the next 360, and I think it likelier both will be more like the PS2- continuing to be sold, still getting some new content for nearly a decade, coming out in more compact forms... but precluding new consoles from either, no. I expect both are deep in dev on succesors, waiting for better, more appropriate times for launches some ways off. Not to be ready for a move like that by the other guy is risking being on the losing side for years.
I'm simplifying even so, but no new MS/Sony hardware until 2015-16... nuh-uh. (And Nintendo will go its own way, good luck with that, beyond the inevitable WiiHD).

There is just not much point in pushing the rendering technology much further as long as we're using 2D screens for visualization.

Re: UT series going on hiatus
Having tried Unreal 3, I don't really blame them. They've got a really nice engine working here, and if this console generation is going to be as long as everyone's claimed, there's probably not going to be a need for a new engine for a while.
And it feels like team based fps are taking precedent over ffa types these days, right? Everyone's got to have their own spin on it. I'm sure someone will come out and correct me, but if you look at what's being played, team games are really taking over.

Nonsense, plain old 2D screens could get a LOT better, especially on consoles.
Heck most consoles don't actually render at 1080 yet; they just upscale from a lower internal framebuffer.
Once a console game looks like a photorealistic movie then I'll agree we're ready for visor screens.

I dunno. I played CTF a whole lot more than FFA DM. The team games have always been there. On servers that allowed voting team games were always the winners while I was on. The Gears players I play with wish there was FFA in GoW2 just for a change in pace once in awhile but don't seem to care too much that FFA is missing.
