lighters/airports/airplanes

someone, PLEASE clear this up for me. after gooooogling this for the past half hour (and reading the official guidelines), i'm still a bit mystified as to what can and can't be taken on a plane.

1. i have a Zippo. currently, it is out of fluid. can i take it with me, as its empty? can i refill it and take it with me?

2. i have a couple of Bics. can those go with me?

kthx.

Re: lighters/airports/airplanes

Looks like Bics are fine, Zippos are fine, and torches are right out.

It's the TSA though, so it's up to the employee that you encounter.

Why do you need so many lighters?

Also, keep in mind some airlines have tighter restrictions than others. It's best to check the specific airlines website right before you leave.

Re: lighters/airports/airplanes

no no no. i don't need to take so many lighters with me. that would be silly. i just didn't want my Zippo snatched away (like the one my wife gave me on our honeymoon) at the gate, never to be seen again.

Re: lighters/airports/airplanes

I have had a few Bics confiscated. I have gotten on the plane with them. No rhyme or reason, really. And you can take a pack of matches  on with you.

My wife actually had two box cutters in one of her regular luggage pieces that she had forgotten about and who knows how many flights she went on with them. (She used to fly at least once a month)

Re: lighters/airports/airplanes

I'd leave the Zippo at home just to be on the safe side. It's not like you won't be able to find a lighter at your destination.

You can never tell what they're going to take, and what they aren't. My SIL had a pill cutter confiscated. You can't do any harm to anything other than a pill with thatl.

Re: lighters/airports/airplanes

You can also always pack them in your luggage.

For valuable stuff, especially laptops, it is usually best to FedEx them to the hotel you will be staying at before you get on the plane.

Take this plane to Cuba or I will give you a very small cut on your finger!

You can't smoke on the plane anyway. Buy a lighter at the airport gift shop for your deplaning nicotine fix.

Re: lighters/airports/airplanes

Lukellucas just lost his lighter. Carryon luggage is searched and contraband (the lighter) is confiscated.

And then they put you on the "List".

I'm still amazed that the TPA personnel misidentified a Medal of Honor as a chirken, throwing star.

Don't be surprised if they take it. And don't be mad.

Re: lighters/airports/airplanes

What's ridiculous is that they won't let you reclaim the item.

My mom had an $80 swiss army knife she always carries in her purse and forgot it was there.
There was no provision for her to reclaim it, either she missed her flight or lost the knife.

I don't understand why they can't put those types of items in a box with a claim number and let you pay storage fee to retrieve the item later.

Re: lighters/airports/airplanes

Because they don't care. You are viewed as a probable security risk. Why should they treat you like a full rights citizen?

Re: lighters/airports/airplanes

They could even profit from it.
$5.00 a day for small box, insurance at $3.00 per $100 of value.
Don't claim within specified period, they auction it in a lot auction to local flea market dealers.

Who says you can't smoke on planes? Just tape a shower cap securely over the smoke detector in the bathroom and you're good to go!

Some jerk tried that on a greyhound bus.
An even bigger jerk went up and told the driver.
I was stuck at a rest stop for about 30 minutes while they waited for the highway patrol to arrive and do the paperwork (take statements etc.) and arrested the guy.

On the bright side, we were allowed off the bus while they waited, so I could smoke.
