Memory

I just have 1 question, I plan on buying my son a 15" Powerbook. I really didn't want to open up the laptop, With that said, what's so special about the memory Apple sells that it costs $1,000.00  more to take it from 4gb to 8gb? It would only cost me $300 more for a faster processor, but $1000 for more memory? confused

Re: Memory

There's nothing special. Buy your ram from somebody else. Even if you pay to get it installed, it will be A LOT less.

Re: Memory

They add value to the memory by vetting it, garuanteeing that it is the appropriate kind. Also they are removing the current RAM and replacing it with 2 new sticks. You should actually get a break on price since the configuartion should take into account the actual swap of memory from 2 GB sticks to 4 GB sticks. They don't though.

Most people argue that they don't add that much more value. You can usually take it to a certified repair center and have them install the correct memory for a lot cheaper.

Re: Memory

Golly, guys.

I once paid US$1382.00 for 32 MEGAbytes of RAM for a 386 running OS/2.  sad

And you all cry over 1000.00 for 4 GIGAbytes (4000 MegaBytes).  wink

I do suggest getting the best brand of RAM.  Or at least the best return policy (lifetime warranty with a company that will actually be around for a few years).  I think Apple knows how many sticks of RAM go bad so you are prepaying for the "free" replacement.

Still, no need to pay Apple for added RAM.  Your local computer shop can do it for a small fraction of that amount.

Re: Memory

I'll assume for a you are so used to calling Apple's high end systems PowerBooks that you missed the memo about the name change 3 years ago.

Actually if you look at supported aftermarket RAM it is $580-899. That does not include installation charges. You could in theory sell you old RAM unlike when Apple installs it but you'll have to seriously overcharge on the shipping to make it worth it.
