Deus Ex: how to play?
I've been having an itching for this game, but I can't figure out how to play it... I have an Intel Mac, and I don't want a Boot Camp solution... I tried Sun VirtualBox and with either its software or hardware based rendering modes, the game was just too slow, with choppy sound.
I assume they gave up on porting the OS X version (that I know exists somewhere they just won't release it...), but is there some other way I can play this game?

Re: Deus Ex: how to play?
The only way you're going to be able to play it is through Windows. I'd imagine something like Parallels should be able to handle it, since they have hardware acceleration. I looked it up, and it appears that DirectX is an option for the renderer, so you should be able to use the hardware acceleration. If it doesn't work, then you're pretty much screwed unless you use Boot Camp.

Re: Deus Ex: how to play?
It might work with Crossover....no Windows neccessary. Rune (another Unreal engine game) works, although you need to make any resolution changes manually in the .ini or it crashes.

It works in Crossover Games (don't know about vanilla Crossover). It works even better in Cider. You need to run the game once to select your renderer, before you "ciderize" the game.

Huh, I didn't realize that they had a Cider standalone. I thought it was always tied into the game.

"Officially," it's tied to the game. But you can just download any game demo that uses cider, open up the application package, and swap out the existing game directory with your own game directory. For full details, just google: how to cider port
It's one of my favorite Mac tricks.

Re: Deus Ex: how to play?
The age of the game might help, too. It was last patche 1/4/01, and I'm pretty sure it's DX7.0a, which should be well supported. DE was built on a 'stretched' Unreal engine and uses no hardware T&L at all, so hardware accel should be simple.
It predated common widescreen displays, so there are a few glitches on typical LCDs- but I did install it a while back to check, and it handles them OK if you set things manually.

Set the res manually in the .ini; it has no menu support for many LCD resolutions. Aspect rato will be mostly right, tho cutscenes have some readability issues. You likely want to up the brightness from default. I set the min framerate down by pref; a 2000 game has no business being slow on any decent machine. Likewise Curved Surfaces was once a heavy perf hit, but that was long ago. As this was only for demo reasons, I didn't optimize settings; just a few quick alterations and a quick test- I think user had a question or issue. There are a wealth of .ini options to tweak.

I tried it in Crossover Games (which I actually had from when they were giving it away free...), and it seemed to work well.
I tried to modify the Command and Conquer 3 (which is a Cider game) and changing the info.plist to the new directory did nothing.
You don't have a recommendation of a Cider game to modify, do you...?

Re: Deus Ex: how to play?
Okay, i figured out what I was doing wrong with the Cider trick (I was deleting the original game folder). But, the Crossover Games version definitely runs a lot better, and doesn't have this weird "aura" glitch the Cider one had.
I was using a Spore Creature Creator Demo, btw.

In Crossover, I was getting this weird glitch where sometimes I'd just get a white screen and no video. I might've been mistaking Deus Ex with UT99, tho.

I'm not sure which one I used, as it was a long time ago. I think it was either Spore Creature Creator or Myst Online. You really have to experiment with different versions to find the one that works the best with the game you're trying to run. But if it's working good in Crossover Games, I'd say leave well enough alone.
For newer games, Cider seems to run them faster, so it's always my first choice. I also like the fact that each cider game is a nice, tidy, self-contained application bundle, and you don't have to wait for Crossover to start up. I tend to only use Crossover for games that run glitchy in Cider.

Re: Deus Ex: how to play?
Hi, first post, this thread actually brought me here
Anyway ive been having similar problems, thought id share how i got round them.
Only recently have been using a mac, but ive had trouble with deus ex on windows too so things were a bit familiar.
Im using crossover games. I had some brightness problems, and also the white screen. Changing to open GL fixed the brightness in the menu, but not in game. The only way i found was to run the game in a 4:3 res otherwise it would just be unplayably dark.
However, i have just managed to get it working in 1680x1050:
Installed (with crossover), chose direct3D for the renderer.
Patched (with crossover) to the latest (ver. 1112fm)
Used dxfix (with crossover...) (http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/dxfix.zip)
You can set what fixes to apply, i changed aspect ration to 16:10, res to 1680x1050, non-scaling gui and 32-bit color. Theres a guide here: http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/
Albeit for windows users, but you get the idea.
Also if you install the High Definition texture project (http://www.offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/) as i did,
copy over the [WinDrv.WindowsClient] section from the deusex.ini to the hdtp.ini after youve applied all the fixes etc to deus ex vanilla, and it should run fine.
My only annoyance now is the bar that runs across the top of the screen as if its windowed and maximised. I dont even know if thats just a mac thing? lol ill learn to deal with it, along with alot of things.
Hope this helps someone else!

A little off topic, but does a three year old version of Crossover work with the current MS Office suite.

Re: Deus Ex: how to play?
Thanks for sharing, corned_beef. I'm blown away over the high-res texture project. It seems a lot better than some of the ones I've seen for other games.

The GOTY had none of these issues out of the box. The resolutions and gamma all pretty much worked.
Thanks for posting the HDTP though, that is definitely icing on the cake, although the game looked good anyway once I turned the "curved surfaces" option on in the ini file.
There is one minor glitch... on cut scenes, the video draws only on the top 2/3rds of the screen. This is not a big deal though.

Re: Deus Ex: how to play?
I think dxfix changes aspect ratio and fov so you get all the screen for the resolution, cutscenes have been fine since I used it.
If you like the hdtp check out:
new vision (mod to replace world textures): http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision
I believe the two mods are compatible.
Also theres a port to the UT2004 engine, called deus ex reborn.

Re: Deus Ex: how to play?
Shouldn't be too hard. I have several... 'fact, PC Gamer once had a DVD issue with five full free games. Deus Ex: GOTY Ed. was one. No patching required, MP files included.
(Yeah, that'll make you happy. But it's around, Steam, GOG- somebody has or will have it soon enough).
