Crytek On The Future Of Game Graphics

Crytek's Yerli On The Future Of Gaming Graphics on Gamasutra shares some thoughts from Crytek co-founder Cevat Yerli's GDC Europe keynote where he discusses the history of their engine development efforts and the future of game graphics. Here's a bit:
Talking trends, Yerli observed that GPUs and CPUs are "on a collision course", as CPUs get more parallel and GPUs -- already highly parallel -- are moving towards more general-purpose computing. He recommended OpenCL as a good base for addressing the issue.
In general, Crytek is trying to make all of its engines very scalable, due to the uncertainty about when the next-gen consoles might arrive. Yerli suggested that Crytek is estimating 2012 to 2013 for the next generation of home console hardware. But thanks to the success of the relatively horsepower-light Wii, "there's a big debate about whether there will be a next generation at all", he admitted.
The Crytek co-founder also discussed the dangers of the Uncanny Valley in work that companies -- even Crytek -- are doing. So he suggested most games use artistic styles, physics and AI to differentiate themselves, at least up to 2012 when the next generations may arrive.
Early visual style development is key, even now, he said. Procedural content development is also a heavy research area for Crytek, with Yerli saying that his dream is to create a game made by just a few people that looks like it was created by many more.

Not quite sure what you mean there. Computers have always been inert lumps on their own, but I doubt you meant that.

I don't know why all of today's game characters can't move like Konoko from Oni. There are games now that look incredibly realistic, but characters still move like C3PO.
That's what needed. Better physics and animation. More realistic movement.

There has been a huge push to better graphics, better graphics, better graphics and not always with a corresponding push with better story, better control, better playability, etc...
I personally can have have as much, if not more, fun on a game with simpler graphics if the rest of the game is tight enough.

I hope they've learned that perhaps we don't want to have to run out and buy $400 graphics cards to play a $50 game and that perhaps they should scale back a little. And yeah, focus on new and interesting game play. Especially AI (and extra especially friendly AI) and pathfinding - someone needs to spend the time to make it work well.
As for consoles, if the PS3 gets more decent games, I might trade in the 360...

There's that Euphoria middleware that's used in GTA4 and Force Unleashed. In short, emulates the sense of balance in characters when you force push, shoot, or run over them. It's not perfect; everyone basically is drunk, but it's a step in the right direction.
edit: There's also that Protac thing in Madden 10 that does something like this. I haven't played it, but this is one of those "about time" kind of things.
