It's raining sturner games
On top of all the other recently released and/or announced games and expansions, is... wait for it...
Napoleon: Total War Announced [Aug 19, 2009, 09:27 am ET]
SEGA announces Napoleon: Total War (not to be confused with Commander: Napoleon at War), saying the next installment in the Total War series of real-time strategy games from Creative Assembly is due in February, 2010. The Napoleon: Total War Product Section is live with a trailer and some screenshots, IGN has an early Napoleon: Total War Preview, and here's a bit from the announcement, which references the "turn-based campaign":
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (August 19th, 2009) – SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA of America, Inc. today announced Napoleon: Total War, the first in an all-new story driven branch of The Creative Assembly’s multi award winning Total War RTS franchise. Napoleon: Total War will keep the franchise’s genre-leading 3D battles on land and sea. The turn-based campaign is split into three different story-driven campaigns, telling the story of the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte through his most famous battles.
In Napoleon: Total War, aspiring generals have the chance to play as the legendary French general Napoleon Bonaparte or as one of his opposing factions. Battling through his three biggest military campaigns, the game will take you through Italy and Egypt, narrating the early years of the fearsome commander, while the third campaign will tell the story of his fateful drive towards Moscow and, ultimately, his showdown with the Duke of Wellington at one of the most famous battles of all – The Battle of Waterloo.

Got $6 and 30% off this week? This'un's a tank game; 3rd person, but with very accurate damage modeling. A classic that didn't reach enough of its target market; dev'ed by Germans working with museum originals nearby.

Ogre ftw?
When I found a copy of Treadmarks for $3 at Best Buy, a tank racing game with early deformable terrain, various models, speeds, weps etc.- coded by a young guy who lived just long enough to see it go gold, and blessed by The Carmack on a Make-A-Wish visit (in OpenGL no less- where's the OSX port?), I actually thought of an [MA] Treadmarks. But there were no more to be had, and other reasons against. Years ago, maybe '04ish.

Not unheard of, but very unusial for a Winders game, and GOG makes sure all their stuff runs on the modern OSes. Perhaps a Boot Camp or EFI issue?

Hey, Bat, I just picked up a copy of Armed and Dangerous for the Xbox for $3.
Looks like it'll run on a 360, too.

Cool beans. I only have a few console games; backwards compat seems to vary. Halo 2 never shed its ghosting problem, but at least it scales to 1680x1050 and likely higher; my Halo 1, recently found, currently only goes to a 1280x960 window (cutscenes play at 720p). Maybe an update will improve that first time I fire it up while on XBL, and meanwhile FSAA actually seems to work pretty well in it. Ear was right about some of the shaders being better too; one can only guess what might've been with a bit more dev time. I still think HPC was shoved out early to debut the same day as Half-Life 2. By the time Gabe 'fessed up it wouldn't ship 9/30, HPC was likely Gold.
(DX9 does give HPC some polish and texture filtering it lacks on console, and when I think of it on 5870s, Voodoo-5 style supersample AA and angle-independent AF...
)
But yeah, cool. Dunno 'bout controller issues, but hell, reefdog used to fire it up and let it run for hours just to hear the music. Good stuff, I miss it. (Must... finish... new... rig...)

Hearts Of Iron 3 Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse |
Virtual Programming has announced the Mac release of Hearts of Iron 3, the latest installment in Paradox Interactive's World War II war strategy series. The game allows players to choose from over 100 countries during the years 1936 to 1948, features nearly 15,000 provinces, and is five times larger than the previous installment.
“Hearts of Iron III offers the ultimate World War II simulation on the Mac,” said Mark Hinton, CEO of Virtual Programming. “The amount of depth and detail is so staggering that players will feel like they’re watching a documentary unfold.”
“We’re thrilled to see the latest entry in the Hearts of Iron strategy series arrive for Mac OS X,” said Johan Andersson, Executive Vice-President, Development, for Paradox Interactive. “The third edition is the most immersive and engaging strategy game we’ve ever developed.”
Since shortly after World War II ended, history buffs have debated “What if?” scenarios. The Hearts of Iron series has long given players the opportunity to play with such situations to their hearts’ content, and Paradox Interactive’s Hearts of Iron III offers the deepest experience yet. The Mac OS X version of the game is available now from Virtual Programming.
Players guide one of more than 100 countries between the years 1936 and 1948, making strategic decisions that could change the course of history. Hearts of Iron III features a huge map containing over 15,000 land and sea provinces, giving military commanders plenty of room to maneuver dozens of 3D air, land, and water units. Brute force isn’t the only option, however: players can engage in diplomacy with other nations as well as manage a realistic logistic system that ensures transportation of vital supplies.
Like other Paradox strategy games, Hearts of Iron III also stars military commanders and politicians based on their real world counterparts and driven by finely-tuned artificial intelligence that enables realistic interaction with them. The flexible technology tree allows players to choose from hundreds of categories for improving their forces’ capabilities, while a dynamic weather system impacts battlefields in realistic ways.
System Requirements:
OS X 10.5.8 or higher
Any Intel CPU
GeForce 7300, Radeon HD 2400 (GMA cards not supported)
128 MB VRAM, 1GB RAM
1.3 GB hard disk space
Broadband connection for Internet play & Product Registration
Hearts of Iron 3 costs $39.95 (£29.95 €34.95). Click over to the links below for more information.

Gold - PT Boats: Knights of the Sea [Dec 21, 2009, 1:12 pm ET]
Battlefront.com announces that PT Boats: Knights of the Sea, and the English edition of the World War II naval combat game is on track for release on Christmas Day, the worst shopping day of the year. They offer a $10.00 discount on preorders, saying preorder customers can download the game immediately on release day while waiting for the DVD to be delivered. Here's word on the game: "'PT Boats: Knights of the Sea' is a full-blown naval simulation, and more: combining key elements of a strategic, tactical and action simulator, the game allows the player to control each crew member separately - or command whole groups of ships in a strategic layer!"
Long-delayed, its once-l33t DX10 grfx should still be pretty spiffy.

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea Demo [Dec 31, 2009, 11:33 am ET]
A demo for PT Boats: Knights of the Sea is now available, offering the chance to sample the recently released World War II naval combat game. Word is: "The free demo version of PT Boats : Knights of the Sea v1.1, released exclusively by Battlefront.com last week, is offering a great insight into what this unique naval simulation has to offer - the unprecedented ambient effects, water physics and other simulation details of handling a 'mosquite [sic] boat' fleet, to mention a few. The demo includes 3 airplanes, 16 naval units, 3 tutorial missions, as well as a demo campaign playable from both the Allied and the Axis points of view!" The download is available on Battlefront.com and it's mirrored on AtomicGamer, ComputerGames.ro, Gamer's Hell, and WorthPlaying.

Re: It's raining sturner games
Series?.. what all I've been missing, as someone who still has his early '80s Yacquinto pen and paper IC games.
Ironclads: High Seas. PC Game. Totem Games. $19.99
Passed Inspection: Great graphics, challenging AI, realistic physics, nice interface, neglected topic, useful editor
Failed Basic: No multi-play, lack of weather and land.
Totem Games’s Ironclad series just keeps growing in response to gamers’ wishes. The first version was turn-based and focused on littoral and harbor clashes. The turn-based engine produced some strange situations such as ships sailing past opponents without receiving fire. The next version, Ironclads: High Seas, fixed that problem with a real-time engine but didn’t afford players much latitude in creating scenarios. Totem has responded not only by releasing a scenario editor but also by including two new ships for this game of naval combat in the American Civil War.
The game is available by download from www.totemgames.ru. Activation requires a one-time exchange of emails; answers from Totem Games are timely. The game is DRM-free.
Angels in the Detail
Ship graphics are superb. Spars, rigging, smokestacks, deck guns and hatches are finely detailed. Hull planks and gun ports are shown clearly, down to holes and scorch marks from hits. Fires blaze and ships keel over. Stack and gun smoke are persistent and drift realistically. Speed and damage percentage can be seen by holding the mouse tip over ships. An info panel at the bottom of the screen describes details such as flooding amounts, current and maximum ship and group speeds as well as gun number, position and type. Wakes and bow waves reflect vessels’ speeds and courses. Unfortunately, the sea state is always smooth.
Zooming in and out, rotating and tilting views allow players to either look at the big picture or be on the same level as the crews.

Amazingly, there are, and the first game is now only $10. Hmm... and for those who didn't read further,
Coming Soon! Ironclads: Schleswig War 1864.
The Danish government wanted to annex the duchy of Schleswig to the Danish kingdom while the Prussian government, for internal political and strategic reasons, wanted Schleswig to finally became a part of Germany.
A key element of Denmark's war strategy was the blockade of Germany's Baltic sea ports, thereby disrupting German overseas trade and hindering Prussian naval operations in support the Prussian army. The supreme commander of the Prussian army insisted that the navy attempt to breach the blockade.
