The Apple //gs was compatible with old Apple ][e programs.

True, but the reverse is not possible.  I guess it only seems weird to me because both machines were being produced simultaneously (in fact, the //e was discontinued after the ][gs).

Apple also made a expansion card for the LC that could run Apple //e programs but not Apple ||gs ones.

Yeah, but you had to pay extra.  Still cheaper than buying a full Apple //e, though.

Re: Rosetta

I forgot about that //e card for the Macintosh LC. It actually let you attach either a 3 or 5-inch floppy drive.

Gaah, my memory of those computers is getting fuzzy. I think the connector of my (old) 5-inch drive might be different from the newer style of 5-inch floppies. I think mine had flat ribbon cables with 20-pin headers. The newer ones look like they have 19-pin connectors is a more modern plug.

But anywho, the //e card for the Mac cost $250; still a hefty chunk of change if your only goal was to transfer your data.
[Edit] Plus, it came out years after the introduction of the original Macintosh.

I was thinking Apple could have produced something like a very cheap came-port serial adapter (along with EZ driver software) just to move your data.

Maybe Mrreet2001 (post #13 above) was right. The Apple][ division was so hostile to the new Macintosh division that they refused to cooperate.
