Yes, I believe they are asking $10 to upgrade to Snow Leopard.

Re: Snow Leopard - Aug 28

It's a Trojan. And requires that the user be stupid and install it itself. It's like giving someone a hammer and saying "Bash your head in for me a few times, okay?"

I like that it caught it. Shows how ahead Apple is. By being there from the start they can catch a lot more of this stuff as it comes out. Unlike Microsoft who sat idly by while viruses and trojans and malware came out right and left and said "Oh, let the third parties figure it out."

Best part is that it's free and part of the OS. And you don't have to install some silly background thing that scans your system all the time slowing you down and getting in your way when you least expect it.

Very nice.

Also, I will be there on Friday at the MacOutfitters in Doylestown, PA picking up my copy. Just don't know what time. They haven't sent out any emails yet. Which is weird.

Re: Snow Leopard - Aug 28

Has anyone gotten shipping info from Apple yet?  I just ordered it directly from them (since I won't be able to get to Best Buy on Friday).  It's supposedly going to be "delivered" on Friday.  I would have thought they would have sent it today (wednesday), as 2 day shipping is a good deal cheaper than next-day.

They charged my card Monday, too.  Sure didn't waste any time on that part.

I whole-heartedly agree. Good to see Apple being proactive on this. That part in bold is the joy of leaving an AV program running loose on a Windows box. Been there, done that.

It's not like that at all ... It's like giving someone a car ... they say oooh a free car ... then at night a bunch of midgets pop out of the trunk and rob the person's house.

Most people are unaware that it is a Trojan ... if they did they wouldn't have installed it.

Well, thanks to the new anti malware in 10.6 only a real idiot will not pay attention to that message. This could potentially ante up the Macs rep as being malware invulnerable which is not true, but that antivirus is a big help.
We won't be seeing many infected Macs for a while.

Re: Snow Leopard - Aug 28

Could somebody help me out on this?   I did use the search function, but couldn't find a real answer.

If I upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6, using the $29 Upgrade version, what happens if my computer tanks later?   If I have no OS, will I have to completely install 10.5 and then upgrade it to 10.6?

(Thanks to the miracle of Time Machine, this is unlikely to happen to me -- I'm just wondering if the 10.6 disk will actually be a functional install disk.   My wife used to have an "Upgrade Copy" of XP that required you to insert your official windows 98 disk to install.   What a pain.)

MAC OS X 10.6 SNOW LEOPARD RETAIL

that "should" mean its a full OS and not an upgrade.

My experience is if my Leopard detects any supported OS (in my case 10.4+) even a tanked one on any drive (whether it's the one you are installing on or not), it will let you upgrade or even clean install.

Re: Snow Leopard - Aug 28

Waiting for enough money to buy the box set family pack (the inclusion of iWork and iLife makes it worth it), and possibly to see if anybody else with a core solo has any issues with the install.  I've long since lost my Tiger disks, so any OS install I attempt will be irreversible.  My wife's MBP, on the other hand, is in bad need of a reinstall and also does not have her Tiger install DVD.

I wish I could properly explain it, but for us, it boiled down to being rather disorganized.  It's an issue that is soon to be corrected, though!

Well, seeing how most of us don't have to re-install the OS every few months due to problems, I can understand why...

Re: Snow Leopard - Aug 28

Installation
The first thing you'll notice on double clicking the 'install Mac OS X' icon is that the installer doesn't immediately restart your machine and boot the OS from the DVD, as has been the case in the past. Like most things in Snow Leopard, the installer has been completely updated.

Simplicity is the key here and, unless you want to dig deeper and do a custom install, you'll need to click a couple of standard EULA agreement buttons and that's it. Done. No keycodes or passwords. No nagging about copyright infringement. Nada. It just gets on with the job.

A clean install to a recently-formatted drive took 35 minutes and, despite some reports to the contrary, made no effort to check that a previous copy of Leopard was installed - take note Tiger users. An update to an existing install of Leopard 10.5.4 took a little longer at 55 minutes, but that included checking and isolating out of date and incompatible software and installing Rosetta which is required for certain legacy apps from the PowerPC era. This upgrade left pretty much everything intact including user accounts and preferences, network connections and even desktop icons. Totally seamless.

The installer also intelligently installs only the printer drivers it thinks you require by checking which printers are installed on your network or have been used recently. Apple reckons Snow Leopard will save you at least 7GB of hard drive space once installed. Some users have reported as much as 20GB on older machines and we raked back 9GB. We suspect that a large chunk of this has been achieved simply by not installing thousands of useless printer drivers.

Boot it up
