Re: Anecdotal Warning - Living in Glen Beck Nation
Tipsters inside Fox News tell us Glenn Beck's vacation this week from his Fox News show was not planned. We hear Beck was told to take this week off to let some of the heat surrounding him die down. That heat began July 28 on "Fox & Friends" when Beck said he thought Pres. Obama has "a deep-seated hatred for white people," adding, "This guy is, I believe, a racist."
In the days and weeks that followed an organization called ColorofChange.org mobilized an effort to get advertisers to pull their spots from Beck's show. Earlier this month, a Fox News spokesperson told TVNewser that the advertisers simply moved their spots from Beck to other programs, "so there has been no revenue lost."
But the list of advertisers grew to 20 and so did the resolve inside FNC that something more should be done.
A Fox News spokesperson denied our accounts and simply told us, "Glenn Beck will back on Monday." But several sources inside FNC confirm that this is a forced vacation.
Insiders note the ColorofChange movement is new territory for FNC. Other opinion hosts, including Sean Hannity, have not experienced an advertiser backlash.
The cooling off period this week seems to be working. The opinion coming from media watchers is that, in the end, Beck's not going anywhere, that he's too valuable to Fox News right now. Others have written that these advertiser boycotts don't work in the first place.
Beck's show Monday was taped, while Judge Napolitano has been sitting in this week. And, what does Beck have to say about all this? We'll see on Monday when he returns to the Fox News airwaves.

Re: Anecdotal Warning - Living in Glen Beck Nation
I wonder why this group started with Beck. There are lots of other Fox targets, as the article points out. Then there's non-Fox people like Limbaugh.
And I'd agree that boycotts don't seem to be particularly effective. It's interesting that this one has gotten even this much traction. What it comes right down to, though is that it takes a lot to get people to change their habits. Geico could run ads during the Hitler Resurrection Hour, and people would still want to save a lot on their car insurance.

Re: Anecdotal Warning - Living in Glen Beck Nation
I dunno. Fox News as a whole is pretty outrageous, but the advertisers didn't leave the network, just the one show they got direct pressure about. I think they're happy to be "associated" with anything as long as they don't think people are paying too close attention.

Well, exactly. This got hot enough that Beck took a vacation while things cooled off... people will forget, advertisers will come back. Nothing permanent.

Here's what apparent super-genius Glenn Beck has been doing with his time since the advertisers have jumped ship:
The Aug. 27, 2009 episode of “Glenn Beck” on Fox News was television beyond description. I’ll just focus on the closing segment. Beck, having spent four days scrawling the connection between radical groups and the Obama administration on a chalkboard, lines them up:
Obama
Left
International
Graft
ACORN-style organizations
Revolutionaries
Hidden Agendas“They all select their words first!” says Beck. “And then they tie them together into one word!”
He pauses. “One letter is missing.”
At this point, the viewer realizes that the letter “C” is missing from the world “OLIGARCH.” But no! Beck scrawls out a “Y.” And tomorrow, he promises viewers a “plan of action” against these people, step one, we presume, being branding them with this name: The OLIGARHY.

Its ok because the omniescient Res has, without any evidence (because of course the Mighty Res needs no evidence), assured as all that there are PLENTY of advertisers who would love to reach his audience of idiots.
There are.
He now draws more viewers than Hannity. I think O'Reilly still has him beat, though.
More people listen to Howard Stern on any weekday than those that tune into all of those shows combined. So? They pull in a minute fringe of nuts or those who like to look at train wrecks. Do they pull in a tremendous number of viewers that I'm not aware of?

I believe that for cable news, Fox (as a whole) has many, many times more viewers than any of the other channels. They're definitely not pulling in a fringe audience. They're mainstream.

The look on some peoples faces, who spout information gleaned from Fox news and commentaries, when you present the facts that were left out, is priceless.

No. They can't believe where you might have gotten your information, and they usually have run out of words, and can't rebut.

I bet if you look at the numbers they aren't that great compared to most other "mainstream" media.

As I understand it, Fox and conservative radio have a small group of highly dedicated viewers/listeners who tune in whenever possible. This distorts their numbers versus other media which may have an equal or larger viewership, but without the same dogged regularity.

Re: Anecdotal Warning - Living in Glen Beck Nation
Well, the dailyshow had a clip the other day where Fox people were rattling off their new ratings, and they were far ahead of every other cable news channels. I don't know that ratings can actually be skewed to that degree.
As anecdotal evidence, while I was on a roadtrip last week, we stayed at a different hotel/motel every night. Without exception or exaggeration, they were all showing Fox News in the lobby/common area where the free continental breakfasts were served. (All you can eat "homemade" waffles!)
When we stopped at the BMW dealer to have my bike looked at, they were showing Fox in the waiting room.
And when I was at the dentist on Thursday, guess what channel the TV in the exam room was tuned to.
Anyway, I'm not just bickering the point. I think it's risky to believe Fox has only a fringe audience and fringe influence.

When one of Beck's mouth breathers trys to literally "take back THEIR country", I'm sure he'll quickly claim that was the plan all along.

I've seen the same thing here, in fact I was once surprised to see CNN on a set instead.
I would think that portrays a skewing of the numbers. You're not a FOX viewer, right? Those businesses are foisting FOX on an essentially captive audience.

I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Lifeline. I got a call center in Pakistan, and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.

Also, the businesses that set their TVs to Fox presumably have a reason to believe their customers want to watch it.
