How to turn a PowerMac into a 32 channel live audio mixer?
How would I get 32 mono channels into a Mac tower, complete with monitor/aux returns?
I've been looking high and low -- found an 8 channel FW device from M-Audio, but it doesn't have returns.
I recall seeing a 24 channel PCI card a few years ago -- it used a SCSI 320 interface to hook the breakout box to, and it had mixer software. Can't find it anymore -- it's been awhile.

You would be way better off buying a "real" digital mixer like a Yamaha PM5 or M7CL or something. Unless you can get a 32 channel control surface you're just asking for trouble. Not to mention trying to re-invent the wheel.
We have 2 M7s for work, a 32 and a 48. Trust me they kick ass and sound great and pretty much replace needing to have a FOH rack.

or maybe an Apogee Ensemble FireWire Digital Interface depending on how you have to route the returns
but your really looking at digidesign level equipment here

Yeah but for a live show? Not a single professional audio engineer would do that.

He didn't say it was for a live show. I figured he wanted to record a band in one shot.
doh ... it's in the title. ... well sort of.

Yeah I would agree that for a "live recording" it would be great.
