Memory upgrade
My 3+ yr old Macbook Pro only has 1gig of memory. I've noticed a sluggish performance lately. Would adding another gig make a noticeable difference?
Also, I recently purchased a cable to link my laptop to my new hi-def tv. Video is great, but I do not get audio from my sound system?? Do I need to somehow make a separate connection to get audio?
Thanks

Re: Memory upgrade
Doubling your RAM would most certainly result in a noticeable improvement. Be careful though, it's likely that you currently have 2 sticks of 512MB each in there. In order to upgrade to 2GB you'd have to purchase 2 sticks of 1GB each. Prices are low though, this shouldn't be expensive at all.
Yes, unless you're plugging something into your headphone jack, you aren't getting audio from the laptop.

Fracai - Spot on advice.
lhutton - You'll need to connect an audio cable to your TV from your headphone Jack. Usually a 3.5mm Stereo to 3.5mm Stereo cable. Check on the back of your TV(or stereo receiver) for the sound input. I know on my old Sony I had to connect to using DVI instead of HDMI to get the sound and video on the same channel.

Re: Memory upgrade
I have the same issue as lhutton. Can I just take my laptop in Apple and they can do it? Do I order the RAM from Apple or how would I go about all of this? I'm a rookie to rendering the hardware of a computer. Thanks in advance.

Re: Memory upgrade
I just confirmed the RAM configuration through Apple's support site and then purchased the best deal I could find for my Mini. There's no reason the same wouldn't work on a MBP. In fact, replacing the memory yourself is even easier on a MBP since all you need to do is open up the memory door on the bottom of the laptop. Ifixit.com has a variety of pointers, and I'm sure that MyService will probably have competitive pricing on mac memory.
One caveat: you should make sure that whatever website you purchase from guarantees compatibility for your system. http://crucial.com/mac is a good place to start. They have a downloadable tool that scans your system directly in order to find the right memory for your system. Crucial is an extremely dependable company for memory, as well, but expect to pay a little bit more for that guarantee.
There's what you love to do, and then there's what you get paid to do. Those two things are often different.

For the laptops replacing/installing additional memory is fairly easy given the correct tools--usually a smaller-than-common screwdriver to fit the small screws. Go to the appropriate model of Mac laptop you have via Other World Computing and watch the linked video.
I would have included the iFixIt guides, but their wonderfully clear website is needlessly cluttered now.

Re: Memory upgrade
Thanks to everyone who posted a response to my memory issue.
Regarding the audio issue, that was the first thing I did. I have an audio cable plugged into the back of my receiver that i use for my iphone when I want to play music; works fine. I plug that same cable into the headphone jack of my laptop; no audio????

Re: Memory upgrade
Do you get audio when plug in headphones to your laptop? If so, the issue may be that the video and audio aren't on the same channel on your receiver. If not, there may be an issue with the sound card (DC-in) on your MacBook.

Re: Memory upgrade
Just to be sure: check in System Preferences>Sound>Output and make sure that Internal Speakers is selected and not some other device. When you plug in headphones into the headphones port, your Mac should redirect the sound to the headphones automatically.
