As you all know ...

My MBA is dead! That means I want to retrieve some info from the tiny hard drive it has; especially my music.

What is the easiest way to do that?

confused

Eventually I will post some pics of the poor thing

Re: As you all know ...

Can your MBA boot up so you could network to another comp or is just totally toast?

If it's toast, you'll need to get an enclosure for the hard drive to hook up (via USB) to another comp.

The MBA HDs are a little tricky to find enclosures for. Do you know if you have a first gen MBA (processor speed would let us know) or newer MBA (late 2008 or newer?)

Re: As you all know ...

Instead of an enclosure, you may be interested in a drive adapter.

I'm not dead yet.

Re: As you all know ...

You'll want to make sure that any adapter works with the correct 1.8" LIF connector in your MBA.

Re: As you all know ...

As promised here are a few pics of my lappy.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3473/3924733980_f7098d259b

It was a first gen MBA running the 80 Gb Hd and 1.64 Ghz intel core 2 duo processor.

It turns on and boots up until the point the menu bar at the top and my background both appear. I had always had the dock dissapear but now when I scroll down it doesn't appear,  and any mouse taps or clicks don't seem to work.

confused

Re: As you all know ...

The pics aren't loading for me.

Here are some options:
1. You could use the ethernet adapter to network to another computer and try to get the files off.
2. If you have another Air, or same age Mac (or know someone who does) you can hold down the "option" key on boot. If they are connected to the same wireless network, you can boot your MBA using their HD and then try and transfer the data.
3. You can remove the HD and use an external enclosure (see links below) to transfer the data to another computer (good thing you have the first rev)
4. You can take it in for service to an AASP (like us) and they can do this stuff for you.

Your post inspired me to write an article on the subject:)

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Re: As you all know ...

Thanks. Do you know or can you track down any AASP in Puerto Rico. Cause that is another problem. Can I hold it off until I get another Mac? I'll work on the pics. I am working with my iPhone over here.

If you go to the above link or apple.com/support you can find local AASPs in Puerto Rico (there are 9)

Time shouldn't be an issue, so you could wait until you get another Mac.

Re: As you all know ...

All of those are far away. So I guess I shall go to San Juan. Do you know if Modernica can do custom laptops? I would like a 13 inch MBP with the 2.53 GHz processor and the 4 Gb of ram. Can I transfer all that info that I get back to Snow Leopard. The dead MBA has Leopard 10.5.7.

Edit: Modernica's site is outdated.

Re: As you all know ...

If the data is intact, you should be able to migrate the data to Snow Leopard.

I don't have any info on the local AASPs.

1. The file system is not corrupt
2. The disk itself is not damaged.

Re: As you all know ...

There is a printer driver that is corrupt in one user. I don't know whether the drive is damaged or not other than physical damage.  (which I haven't checked because I have not removed it yet)  The day before that I got a chance to run Onyx and the smart status was ok, and other tests where ok. I also ran the daily, weekly, and monthly scripts.

Does that printer driver count as a corrupt file system?

Re: As you all know ...

Not in my book.   Printer driver's can be reinstalled.    A driver is not "user data".  User data is unique to you.

Re: As you all know ...

So I am good to go as long as the drive is not physically damaged.

Re: As you all know ...

I finally became brave enough to open up the MacBook Air. I removed the battery and the stereo. I was amazed of how tiny the logic board and how tiny the hard drive is. That being said it is completely intact. So I reinstalled the battery and the stereo. Fired it up and the computer worked just fine. That reminds me battery is slightly damaged and the stereo is almost alive. I also fixed the trackpad and the button that was sort of stuck. I synced my songs to the phone and it seems that the laptop is repairable. I only need to get the following parts: a new battery (although the current one works and has 94% charge) new stereo, new lower case and new screen case with screen.
