Big Brother: "No Violent Games for You, Young Man!"

Here's an article written by a close friend of mine, hot off the presses:

Re: Big Brother: "No Violent Games for You, Young Man!"

Yee is a perennial on the anti-violent-game circuit, so to speak. The bulk of the research so far seems to point in the opposite direction... anyway, we still have it better here than, say, Germany, or even Australia...

L4D2 AU Ban Appealed [Sep 24, 2009, 3:55 pm ET]

Valve announces the final ratings for Left 4 Dead 2 for all territories except the UK and New Zealand, where final ratings are expected in days. They also address the recent news that the co-op zombie shooter sequel is refused classification by the OFLC for sale in Australia by saying they have appealed that decision. Here is the rundown of Left 4 Dead 2 ratings as of now:

COMPLETED RATINGS
PEGI (continental Europe) - 18+
ESRB (North America) - M
CERO (Japan) -Z (corresponds to Mature in US)
IFCO (Ireland) - Approved the title for classification.
USK (Germany) - 18+
Singapore - Mature 18
FPB (South Africa) - 18+
KGRB (Korea) -18+

PENDING RATINGS
OLFC New Zealand - In progress.
BBFC (UK) - In progress.
OFLC Australia - Refused to rate on September 17. Appealed September 23.

Sturner better move to AU so's he can be protected from the mind-rot that the killing of virtual zumbies induces... poor sensitive soul. Some truly can't cope. We sympathize- apparently the Home won't even let him watch Godzilla tromple toy Tokyo or read comix any more. big_smile

(Any of the M|L Mighty Zombie Killinators based in AU? They might be in trouble later this year).

Left 4 Dead 2's planned mid-November local release was put in jeopardy today, when the Australian Classification Board had put its legislative foot down. The Classification Board is the government body responsible for rating all video games content authorised for sale in the country. According to its Web site, Valve's upcoming first-person shooter has been refused classification (RC) for failure to adhere to the current maximum MA 15+ ratings guideline for games. (Only films can reach the board's maximum R18+ rating.) The announcement means the Valve title is now illegal to sell, rent, or promote within Australia.

More than 3,000 peer-reviewed studies suggest playing ultra-violent video games by children

Excuse me? 3000?

Don't think Valve will be hurting by losing the Aussie market. I bet the smuggling video games business is strong down there.
