Urrgh 02 Quick Silver power mac is useless with any app game. Help!
I have an 02 Quick Silver home pc . I am running Leopard and have three 512 sticks ram. I have a 150 gb hard drive and a 250 gb back up hard drive. The processor is a 933 mhz and a bus speed of 133 mhz. I don't know a lot about the hard ware of computers so forgive my ignorance.
The problem seems to be with applications. Any type of game (poker, online yahoo games etc) not gaming like world of war craft or anything like that, just simple games is in slow motion. I can't have more than one program up at a given time or the computer just slows way down. I tried re-doing the install and taking all excess programs off the computer and nothing gives. I hate to admit it but my little Dell netbook makes my mac look ancient.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Not enough RAM for one. And make certain you have at least 10% of your boot drive empty. That would be 15 GB.
You are running minimum RAM on that machine for Leopard. 2GB would be sufficient.

That's what doesn't make sense....there isn't enough ram to have one single internet explorer window open playing a game? The computer doesn't have any files, music or pictures on it, I can't free up any more space. My netbook has equivalent ram and handles online games fine. Does mac just not do well with application games? When I say games, I mean things like Bejewled, poker or farkle (most on facebook).

Well, your Mac is ancient. That G4 was top of the line in January of 2002, which honestly was NOT one of the highpoints in Apple history. Anyhooz, it's a nearly 8 year old computer. Sorry, but it's just not going to keep up with modern tasks.
That said, you're on the right track. My old iBook 1.0 GHz will barely play youtube videos unless I quit every open app and every other window in Firefox. You've maxed the RAM, so you've got that going for ya. My only other suggestion would be to open up Activity Monitor and see what other processes are running that might be sucking up processor cycles.

Yes, any third-party programs that run in the background should be stopped, that will allow you more operational power.

Re: Urrgh 02 Quick Silver power mac is useless with any app game. Help!
You're running:
- An old processor;
- Minimum RAM; you're running a more memory intensive operating system in Leopard (compared to let's say, Tiger, which is probably what you should have instead on this machine)
Flash (as discussed in another thread), for all of your Yahoo and other games, tends to chew up a lot of processor cycles. Weaker processor, weaker performance.
- Weak graphics card (you already know that)
So yeah, all together, it's actually not surprising that even a Dell netbook (which runs an Intel processor, for one, albeit a watered down mobile version, as opposed to a PowerPC) can kick its butt.
Suggestion: Try downgrading to Tiger, maybe ? That would take up fewer resources than Leopard would.
MacBook, 13", early 2008.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I'll try the Tiger out and see if that helps. At some point I'll upgrade to a G5...just trying to put it off a while longer yet.

Do you have 1.5GB RAM, or 512 MB RAM? The first post is a bit ambiguous.
Anyway, the problem sounds like Flash to me, and possibly 10.5 if you're running that version of OSX.
I would use 10.4 on a G4 and a lower version of FLash if applicable.

I would really skip the g5 all together and shoot for an intel.
2.66Ghz QuadCore-Nehalem w/24"LED CD ---2.2Ghz BlackMB---15" 2.4Ghz MBP(work)
Dual 2.3Ghz G5 (4G Ram, 2x 250G HD)(10.5 server)--- 400Mhz G4 PM (10.4 Server)
1.5GHz Powerbook---1.6Ghz G5 iMac

Re: Urrgh 02 Quick Silver power mac is useless with any app game. Help!
Now, I have an iMac G4 with 768 mb of ram and MacOS 10.5, and I experience similar issues. Youtube is slow, videos in iTunes stutter, and Numbers is painful to use. If I put a total of 2 gigs of ram into my system, would I see a drastic improvement? Or would I see a subtle improvement?

it's a G Mac.
i have a G5 powermac with the best card you can stick in it.
and for some things, games being one of em.. it's slow.
it's a 1.8 dual processor... 3G of Ram and an ATI x800xt 512M video card.
runs Tiger.
and it just doesn't cut it.
besides.. SL = EOL for G models.
you want to enjoy the faster things, i highly recommend you do NOT buy anything with a G in it for processor.
hell, the Intels have been around for enough years to gets some steals on one if you wish.

I have a G4/400 upgraded to 900mhz and flash hasnt played nice on this computer for 5 years, just too old.
Old computers are old.
I think the thing is that surfing the web has become a very processor intensive operation on many sites. Flash is a pig.

When you say internet explorer window are you are referring to a browser window like Safari or Firefox or an actual Internet Explorer window, because Internet Explorer hasn't been updated in I don't know how many years, which would add to poor flash performance.

I had a 1.42Ghz G4 Mini from 2005, and even that had trouble with flash. Flash just isn't well optimized for the PPC architecture, or even Macs in general. It never was, really.

Re: Urrgh 02 Quick Silver power mac is useless with any app game. Help!
I have a QuickSilver 933 G4 too, with Tiger 10.4.11, 1.5 MB RAM and it ran fine for many years, and still does. I used multiple web browsers with no problems.
My QS G4 runs OK under Tiger, but I don't do heavy-duty, multimedia intensive operations anymore (like Flash or gaming) since I also got a Mac Pro for that – the QS G4 is a secondary CPU for me now. Maybe Leopard is not the best OS for it, I've never tried it on the QS G4.
With yours, there could be speed issues with Flash, as others have pointed out. Flash just wants a lot of processing power in general. And they usually build software around the current hardware – not 7 year old hardware. In that case, you need to get a faster machine. Possibly it would run faster with Tiger instead of Leopard, too.
Personally, I don't always think it's a good idea to run the most current OS on machines that are that many years older than the OS, even if you CAN boot it, the lack of good performance is still an issue.
Do most applications on your computer besides Flash and gaming generally work OK, otherwise? That would be telling. Might just be best to move on, since you're set on doing processor intensive stuff anyway.
FYI, 1.5 GB RAM is the highest you can go (3, 512 MB SDRAMs) on the QS G4.

Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

Ha! I didn't even notice that. Now I'm curious, too. You're not actually still trying to use Internet Explorer, are you sworaz?
