need new Mac for video editing and graphics
My current system is a PowerMac G5, the last of the non-Intel Macs. Software updates are getting scarce because new versions only run on Intel Macs.
My question is, is using an iMac suitable for graphics and video editing, or do I need a Mac Pro? My videos are in the 1-hr range and I use Final Cut Studio for editing. Of course with the iMac I'd have to get some outboard hard drives. Anyway, help and comments will be much appreciated. The cost difference between the iMac and Mac Pro is quite a bit.
Thanks!

Re: need new Mac for video editing and graphics
If you're doing this stuff 8+ hours a day and making money at it, I'd go for the extra power and expandability of the Mac Pro. But otherwise, the iMac is a perfectly capable little machine. It's got plenty of power, a nice big screen, and external HDs will do just fine for your video storage needs.

Well if you intend to stick with editing DV or HDV, then the iMac will be fine. If you want to make the jump to using ProRes, then the iMac is going to limit you.
