Disk Utility

Hi,

I'm running OSX 10.5.8 and seem to be having a problem burning to a CD with the disk utility. The window where I select the directory/files to be copied always has the 'burn' option grayed out!!!!

Don't know what I'm missing!!

Any help appreciated.

Re: Disk Utility

I have never used disk utility to burn a CD....maybe it only works with disk image files?   Have you tried just burning a CD from the finder?

Re: Disk Utility

Thanks - using Finder still appears to go through the Disk Utility, but it showed up the real problem. The disk appeared empty but after doing an apparently redundant 'erase' the options became operational!! A bit bizarre but there we are.

Re: Disk Utility

There is a "CDs & DVDs" panel in system preferences that allows you to choose what happens when you insert a blank CD or DVD.   It might be set to automatically open disk utility, which you don't really need...you can just double click the CD to open it as an empty finder window, drag what you want to burn onto the window, and click the burn button in the sidebar.

Re: Disk Utility

Thanks for your reply. My aim was to burn a password protected disk image to DVD/CD disk as a means of secure backup. (It's much easier to carry data around on a disk than a large external drive)   I can copy the .dmg file to the external hard disk which obviously keeps the protection, but so far, burning a CD seems to simply copy over the contents (the original files) and loses the password protection. ie it isn't the disk image that is burnt.
Is this just a fact of life or am I missing something?
Thanks again for your help

Re: Disk Utility

If you want the disk image to continue to appear as a disk image after it's been burned, just burn via the Finder by dragging the image file to the blank disk. If you try to use Disk Utility, it will assume you want to burn the disk image the way images are typically used and it will create a disk that matches the data contained in the image.

Re: Disk Utility

OK - Thanks a lot. Thought I'd tried that but must have done something peculiar. It certainly works now.
