Odd network situation
Recently I've been having problems setting up a home network.
Here are the devices I have that I need to be able to connect :
* iMac (23inch)
* Roku netflix player
* Macbook Pro (aluminum)
* Macbook (regular)
* Macbook Air (2nd gen)
* 2 Playstation 3's
I was having issues with a Modem to Airport Extreme. Something about either not being able to find DNS servers, etc. It also had conflicting DHCP numbers, I think? Anyway, I had gotten fed up after trying that with the 3 IP address distribution options.
So now I have my network set up this way :
RCA Cable Modem to iMac (23inch)
* Internet sharing turned on
* Broadcasting with a WEP key
* Both Macbooks and the Air are able to connect fine
Unfortunately, the PS3's and Roku aren't able to connect.
What if I set up the Airport Extreme to extend my wireless network by joining the iMac 23inch network with the WEP key. Would the PS3's be able to connect as well as the Roku?
Can I get in trouble for this configuration as the system preferences suggest?

Re: Odd network situation
Another odd thing about this is that I am able to get online from one user account on the iMac but not the other one.
Should I restart and try again? Why would one account be able to connect and not the other if they both (theoretically) have the same settings?
(and as soon as I switch to that account.. the network goes down)

Re: Odd network situation
Ok, so a network created by an internet sharing iMac cannot be extended.
Which goes back to this issue
MODEM > Extreme > iMac works
But NONE of the other mac's can get an ISP / Internet connection from this configuration.

Re: Odd network situation
Are they wired or wireless?
Wired usually has fewer problems.
Ensure that the Network locations are all set to agree with the router's setup. DHCP, I assume, and all using the same connection setups.
Or are you assigning static IPs to all the devices on the subnet? If so ensure that your Extreme is issuing enough addresses.

Re: Odd network situation
1. Re-set the AirPort Extreme to factory default. Then turn it off.
2. Turn off and/or unplug the modem, and all computers, consoles, and all other devices on the network.
3. Turn on the modem. Allow it time to fully start.
4. Turn on the Airport Extreme. Allow it time to fully start.
5. Start up the iMac.
6. Turn off Internet Connection Sharing.
7. Set the iMac to use DHCP (automatic).
8. Click Apply Now.
9. Wait for the IP address to fill in.
10. Note the DNS server address. That is the Extreme's address. Use this on other devices on your network.
11. Pick another device or computer to connect to network.
12. Set to DHCP (automatic). Use the Extreme's address as the DNS server.
13. Keep going one by one.
14. After everything works try adding security.
15. Write passwords and network name on a piece of paper and NEVER lose that paper.
Getting the security going with all those devices will keep you entertained for hours.
If you have trouble it will probably be a firewall issue on the device that cannot connect to your network. Turn off the firewall to see if you can connect.
Good Luck!

Add on: Be thankful that you don't have to try to type in a 24-digit hex WiFi key into your iPhone/iPod Touch.
There's what you love to do, and then there's what you get paid to do. Those two things are often different.
