WARNING: dump your SMC8014 cable modem/Wi-Fi router from Time Warner

I found this story via Accelerate Your Mac. Basically there are two problems:
1) this modem only has WEP for security, and WEP can be broken in seconds, and
2) once inside your home LAN anyone can access the administration of this cable modem/router. The access to some of the functions of the adminstration page for the router is controlled by Javascript in your browser, but in a dunderheaded move the makers allow full access if Javascript is turned OFF in your browser.

While Time Warner has sent out a temporary fix to limit control over this particular model with a more permanent fix following, my personal recommendation is take it back to your local Time Warner payment outlet and get another cable modem/W-Fi router, preferably one that can use WPA and/or WPA2 for wireless security. If the latter is not available, then get a cable modem from Time Warner and buy your own Wi-Fi router.

The first link says that there are some 67,000 Time Warner customers who may have this model. A small number compared to Time Warner's customer base of 14 million, but it's still YOUR problem if you happen to be among the unlucky.

That's horrific. Thanks for the PSA.
