Unable to upload photos to the web and Q about virus software

Back in April when there was the big scare about Conficker going around I stupidly bought and installed Norton anti-virus software for my iMac.  I ended up having a few trojans anyway but no biggy.  A few months later I started having problems uploading pictures to the internet.  I can upload to Facebook sometimes, but other sites like Photobucket and Flickr I cannot upload without getting an error message and pictures just won't upload at all.  I uninstalled Norton and messed with firewalls a bit, but I still cannot upload any photos at all.  I've tried using different browsers but that doesn't make any difference either.  I've been having to use my MacBook to upload pictures with no problems at all, and that has never had virus software installed on it.  We only have one internet connection in the house that is hooked up to the main iMac, so I can't use my MacBook all the time.

Also, I know that Macs can get viruses, so does anybody have any recommendations for a good anti-virus software?

Thanks for your help smile

Re: Unable to upload photos to the web and Q about virus software

You are mistaken. There are NO viruses in the wild that affect Macs.

I say again, there are NO viruses that exist that affect Macs. Windows, yes.

What error message are you getting?

Also, you can place a router, even a router with WiFi and hard point connections between your main iMac and the ISP connection and allow more than one connection. If your MacBook has WiFi built in you would be good to go.

Norton, by other people's accounts, and popular acclaim, counts a virus. It causes more problems than it solves. I know several Windows users who swear at Norton just a vehemently as do Mac people. Avoid Norton.

Re: Unable to upload photos to the web and Q about virus software

I'm not worried about the WiFi thing, I know all about it, I'm just trying to figure out why this Mac won't upload pics.

And not to argue, but I thought I heard that once Mac started using Intel processors it made them susceptible to viruses?  Thats what I heard from somebody else but I have no clue.

When I upload to Photobucket I get this error message: "Upload failed for IMG_0332.JPG with error: A network error caused your upload to fail. Please try your upload again."  Even though when I upload on my Macbook I have no problems even though I"m on the same network.  I have a similar problem when I try attaching pictures to email using Gmail and Yahoo accounts.  This all came about after I installed Norton, and even though its uninstalled I"m still having problems on both Firefox and Safari browsers.

I forgot to mention I"m using Leopard if that helps any.

Re: Unable to upload photos to the web and Q about virus software

An intel Mac is susceptible to Windows viruses ONLY if it runs Windows in a virtulization application (Parallels or VMWare Fusion, et.al.) or under Boot Camp. In which cases you are running Windows and have all the problems of Windows.

Norton is probably still lurking in the innards of your Mac. It's hard to get rid of. Read this thread for a fuller description and additional lik to find the wee beasties.

Once you have a clean system try to upload an image. If you have no problems, you know that Norton was the root cause. If you still have a problem, let us know.

Try a different browser and/or a different user account on your Mac.

Re: Unable to upload photos to the web and Q about virus software

Try clearing your browser cache and/or cookies (in Firefox, go to Tools -> Clear Recent History. In Safari, go to Safari -> Reset Safari). Though if the problem is impacting both Safari and Firefox, I'd think the problem goes beyond cache and cookies....

Follow Sturner's advice to effectively get rid of Norton (since what you don't want to do is accidentally delete critical Mac system files).

A bit of a rant:

Coming from the Windows world, I'm not surprised at how many people AND enterprises still use Norton (especially when free & more effective antivirus alternatives exist).

Unfortunately, Norton is bloated, prone to false positives, prone to creating system conflicts,
...and derives its sales from "fear and panic" and a "legacy reputation", which is sadly, what seems to have caused you to buy it. sad

Ok, rant over.

Re: Unable to upload photos to the web and Q about virus software

I've cleared cookies on both browsers many times and it still will not let me upload photos.

Ok, I've gone through the files on the computer and sent anything Norton to the trash.  But when I go to empty the trash it will not let me empty the trash because it says that some of the things are still in use.  How do I find out what still in use and where it is?  Please bear with me, my computer knowledge is limited.

Thankfully the annoying norton bar is gone from the safari browser, but thats not much help =P

Follow sturner's link, or google it. There's some software they have to get rid of Norton on the Mac.

Did you try a different browser or user account?

IF you have problems deleting a file, it may have one or more things happening. It's in use, it is locked, etc.

Follow the instructions in this article to force delete the items.

Re: Unable to upload photos to the web and Q about virus software

I restarted the computer and after that it let me empty the trash, so norton is now gone I hope.  I still cannot upload photos though, I tried using a different user and I still get the same error message, and can you recommend another browser besides Safari or Firefox?

Re: Unable to upload photos to the web and Q about virus software

Well before I download another browser, this problem came up after I installed norton.  I know its gone now, but could the program have messed with my firewall settings or something?  Is there a way I can know or fix that?

Re: Unable to upload photos to the web and Q about virus software

Nekollx,

What was the name of that virus you googled? I would be interested in reading about it. I haven't heard ANY thing about an actual released virus. A couple of proof of concepts, yes.

And EST NOD 32 isn't being marketed for the Mac. Linux, Windows, and a couple others, but not Mac.
