Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

By default, the middle mouse button of my Logitech MX laser mouse is set to activate the application switcher. I can't seem to find the setting to disable this anywhere. Mac help says that multi-button mice should activate additional fields to control these shortcuts in my mouse system preferences, but this is not the case. The Logitech system software doesn't seem to control this setting either.

Does anyone have any tips on how to hack this so the middle mouse button is just a middle mouse button? I'm taking a class in Maya, which is very MMB dependent, and this is really slowing me down.

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

Application Switcher!? Isn't that like... System 6? Do you mean Expose?

Anyway, you SHOULD be able to change the setting in the Logitech Control Center.

But you could also check the Exposé and Spaces preference pane. Make sure that no mouse button is assigned to exposé, if that's what you want.

(that's what I think you mean by "Application Switcher")

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

It's not Exposé, though. It's whatever you get when you press CMD+TAB -- overlay of all your active application icons.

The button is clearly mapped to "middle mouse click," and the Logitech Control Center and third-party Steer Mouse software don't seem to be the problem. It's some kind of annoying system default.

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

I'm using the Logitech V470, and haven't had anything of the sort override the mappings in the Control Centre. Have you tried the Apple (and/or Logitech) support forums as well on this issue ?

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

in the Logitech Control Center there should be a lists of button names on the left, and a list of functions on the right. Each item of the right should be clickable and pop up a menu of options. Doesn't it?

Mine looks like this:

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

I have that screen on my LCC and can reassign click designations. The problem is that anything assigned to "middle mouse click" brings up the annoying application navigator bar. For example, if I rearrange my left mouse button to "middle mouse click," my left button pops the bar.

I guess I'm looking for the control panel for the navigation bar so I can change or delete its hotkeys.

I have a Logitech mouse at work that doesn't give me these issues, so perhaps it's isolated the the MX Laser mouse series. I haven't had much luck browsing their support forums.

Having LCC and Steer Mouse installed may be causing a conflict. Try uninstalling one.

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

to tell the truth, I'd uninstall LCC. Logitech makes reallly poor software for Mac.

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

Just to follow-up, I was told to plug in Mighty Mouse to open up the extended mouse preferences, at which point I would be able to switch my middle mouse button from "Application Switch" to "Button 3." Unfortunately, I gave my original Mighty Mouse away, so I had to find an unused one at work before I could give it a shot. It worked like a charm.

Kind of a silly and annoying bug to work through, though.

If you can, you might want to write to Logitech as an after-the-fact. Who knows, they might actually pay attention and improve their future software.

Why on earth would they do that now?

Have you ever been on their forums? There are two or three threads full of very unhappy customers who bitterly complain about the short-comings of their mouse driver/software. They do diddly-squat.

Hells bells, I use an MX 518 gaming mouse, and their software doesn't function correctly for it, in Windows XP!!!!

Damn, I wasn't aware of that. No really, I wasn't! blush When it comes to printers and scanners, I can usually point out who's going to give me driver and software headaches. As far as peripherals, Logitech didn't strike me as a one of these guys. If you say even for Win their software is turd-astic, I've learned something today.

And no, never been to their forums. Futile, I guess, is what you're saying. For a Swiss company, I would have expected better. roll

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

I find this really odd, since I have a Logitech myself.  I can't recall the model number, but it's a three button wheel mouse that also features vertical scrolling by virtue of pushing the wheel to one side or the other.  OSX 10.4.11 accepted it seamlessly.

There's what you love to do, and then there's what you get paid to do.  Those two things are often different.

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

The hardware works well. It's thier control software that seems to suck air. Except for the MX Revolution I purchased. I couldn't get it to stop freewheeling on the scroll wheel, even though I did everything they said. Steermouse and USB Overdrive didn't have the specific support for that feature, though Steermouse does now. I took it back. Went with a Kensington Ci60. Kensington software is only marginally better, but I know Steermouse and USB Overdrive will control it.tongue

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

I'm not sure if Logitech is entirely to blame. If OS X detects a third mouse button in play, which it obvious did, it should open up the Mouse preferences to allow me to change them instead of sticking me with default mouse settings. It seems like it's designed exclusively for use with the Mighty Mouse, which is kind of silly.

Re: Logitech MX Laser Mouse and Application Switcher

Microsoft's mouse control works the same way, so Apple isn't doing anything out of the ordinary. The third-party mouse controllers are much superior to the run of the mill controllers offered by the OS, either OS.
