Re: 167 Dead in Iraq

There is a difference between fighting terrorism, and occupying foreign lands. We have been screwing off on the former, and spending craploads of money and lives on the latter.

I suspect that if we GTFO of the middle-east, we might find that the terrorism problem becomes largely mooted. Sure, we may have to deal with threats to key industries, but I suspect having an occupying force in the middle-east has inflamed more hatred than it has quelled violence.

Do you believe Iraqi's are somehow an inferior people not capable of it?

No more inferior than the Koreans. The Korean war ended 45 years ago and we are still there en mass and the Koreans only achieved a real democracy, what..15 years ago?
Iraq is a quagmire we won't be scrapping off our boots for a long, long time.

This is what I can't believe the public and the deciders in Washington ignored.  Many nations have fantastic corruption and security issues.  Many lapse into military dictatorships.  Many have been fairly stable for the past decade and are still pretty shaky in terms of rule-of-law and free-and-fair elections.

An outside nation creating a stable country (note: not saying democracy) is the exception, not the rule, of foreign intervention.

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Heck, look at Europe where democracy was a deviation until after WWII.
Creating a democracy is something strongly motivated locals almost never manage. Why should we think we can impose one?
