Macbook speakers clicking, sound icon grayed out

This started happening today.

Clicking and barely audible popping noises coming from my Macbooks speakers.

I can't raise or lower the volume now either...

WTF!

Sounds like what happens when a speaker's ground is compromised.  Maybe cross-post this in the Answer Center?


There's what you love to do, and then there's what you get paid to do.  Those two things are often different.

I was going to, but I tried the method where you put in a pair of headphones and jiggle them around, then clean the input, then try again.

Seems to have worked.

FOR NOW.
