Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

An IROC-Z with the 5.7L engine (and yes, the mandatory automatic transmission) was good for 0 to 60 in about 6 seconds and 150mph, and could pull about 0.9G on the skidpad. This was, of course, also a car with a live axle rear end, and not a car you'd want to drive aggressively over wet or poorly maintained roads.

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

Although nowhere near perfect execution it is cool to see Lingenfelter make the effort to revive the Trans Am.

The nose needs to go on a bit of a diet and the taillight area needs a complete rework.

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

There's also this one:

http://www.fquick.com/images/articles/12981.jpg

Interesting that the new Camaro is a copy of the first-generation F-body, yet two different Camaro-based Firebird Trans-Am revivals, from two different builders, both happen to be strongly reminiscent of the second-generation Trans-Am.

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

Has that one been produced 'in the flesh', Bren, or is it just a rendering? If we are picking from drawings I'll take this one.

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

I honestly don't remember, and I don't feel like making the effort to find out. I think it exists, but that pic does look like a rendering, so who knows? Interesting that the schnoz on that Formula 400 seems to split the difference between the two previous Trans Am concepts. I hate the rear quarter-window, however. That treatment doesn't look good on a Mazda 3 and it doesn't look good on the F-body. Worse still, it would reduce visibility when the driver attempted to check over his or shoulder in anticipation of a lane change.

Those Firebirds look a little too much like the Camaro. Overdone and it could easily be mistaken for the Camaro. GM, carbon copying your cars is not cool.

Those aren't GM Firebirds. There are no GM Firebirds. Those are aftermarket body kits for Camaros.

I see what they where going for. The nose looks like it has a little of the old school Trans Am/ Firebird (very little) when it comes to the front grill, but your right, it needs to lose lots of weight on the nose.

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

The rear quarter window that Bren hates on the Formula 400 render is one of the things I like about it. It and the wrap around rear window differentiates it from the 2010 Camaro. The rear pillar and side window shape was made not to look like a '68/'69 like the Camaro. I like how it blends cues from the '70 Trans Am and the '71 Firebird into a nice looking car.

Um.. FireBirds and Camaro's always looked similar. Just a few tweaks here and there. They are all sold by GM.

Speaking of F bodies...
Today when I was washing my car, there were a couple white guys in a 1990s Firebird alternately revving the engine and blasting rap. Then when they left, the driver floored it so hard that it fishtailed out of the parking lot.

Just saying that whoever you are and whatever you do, when you drive a Firebird, you are those guys.

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

Never before had I seen the similarity between the escalade and the denali. Most of those are acceptable but the camaro and firebird are almost identical. Plus these are muscle cars. It wouldn't hurt to make some more differentiation between them.

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

Badge engineering at its worst:

You're thinking about a Cadillac, but you're a younger, sportier type of driver, and have been considering the BMW 3 series? Well a Chevy Cavalier with a Cadillac badge and price tag will surely fit your needs!

http://cadillac-parts.uneedapart.com/images/cadillac-cimarron-parts.jpg

Oh, you were thinking Acura Legend? Nice cars, but can you really trust those Japanese to put them together properly? Better you should have your Legend assembled in England!

Word is that the head of Cadillac has a framed picture of a Cimarron in his office with the phrase "Lest we forget".

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

The sad thing is it's not even their worst car. The bustle-back Seville, with diesel or V8-6-4 variable displacement engine comes to mind.

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

No, it was definitely their worst car. The V8-6-4 had an unacceptable rate of failure but hey at least they were trying something that the rest of the world wouldn't attempt for 20 more years and the rest of the car was fine. The bustle-back Seville was also fine, just aesthetically questionable.

I mean, at least the Buick Skyhawk and Pontiac Sunbird had their own sheet metal. Hell, the Buick even had a turbo option for theirs. The Cimarron looked like someone glued Cadillac badges on a Cavalier and didn't do a thing for the rest of the car.

Re: I don't like the new Camaro...

Strangely enough, back when the Cimarron was a current model, I recall Car and Driver or Motor Trend reporting that it happened to be the fasted car Cadillac had ever sold in the US. Hard to believe. I'm not absolutely sure as to whether they meant this in terms of top speed or acceleration. I want to say acceleration.

One would think that in all of Cadillac's prior history, at least one of their 500 cubic-inch V8 models would have at some point posted a better 0 to 60 time than a V6 Cimarron, but I guess maybe not.

Gotta be acceleration. The V8 monsters had theoretical top speeds in the realm of Mach 1. Even with the weight and wind resistance of the barges they were attached to they still produced immense torque and healthy horsepower.

And yeah, the V-6 wasn't strong but it was an 80s Cavalier with 3.83 rear ratio.
