wow, such an expensive mouse, yet so tempting cause it's so precise, comfortable, and exact in operation! The thing I love about it the most is you aren't sliding your hand all over a desktop, just rolling two fingers and clicking with "surgical" precision and efficiency of movement. Does the Magic Mouse work that way, just like a trackpad instead of sliding the pointer all over your desk? If so, that is its greatest strength. If not, then it's lame.
I remember using a mouse like that, at my local library, my thumb really started to hurt after only 5 minutes of rolling the ball around.
Your thumb! Then you weren't using a mouse like that at all!

If the action on them weren't so soft, squishy and indistinct and the proportions of the keys weren't all wrong, I might like them because they are a good looking KB.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
I did a lot of comparison of the proportions of the keys when it first got mine. Save for the escape and function keys, the sections of the keyboards are within a couple millimeters of EVERY of full size mac keyboard I could find. There is a gap between the base of the key. Unlike older keyboards the tops of the keys are actually larger. In fact the base of the keys were exactly 2 mm smaller than the base of the old styles and 2 mm larger than the top of the same keys measure 2 mm smaller than the tops. Given the padding those key are in the same positions. It took a lot of getting used to the difference in the key height and travel distance though.

It's the action and the height of the keys that really throws me off. I don't think the flatness of the newer KBs helps at all either. I like a KB that has a curve to it like the older USB KBs.
I'm not too worried about it. I have acquired a stash of four older model Apple KBs that will keep me typing happily for many years.
So I'm good

And that I'd never argue. Different people have different needs and that one is pretty different from the normal range of options in that respect.
Proportions and layout on the other hand... it just isn't so.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
Getting back to mouses, I think that as long as there is a desk with a horizontal top that ultimately dictates how the mouse is to be designed and used, there is always going to be a conflict that requires a compromise resolution with what the human body is comfortable doing and how long that comfort generally lasts. A true revolution in mousing will begin with rejecting the desktop as a point to constrict all further design implementation in a new device. A mouse isn't that complicated, like let's say, a keyboard. All you really have to do is move around in two dimensions and click, and do it the best.

Gimmie a way to plug it in and i'd consider it. Until self recharging batteries are in everything, no way you can convince me a wireless is better than wired in the long run. Batteries run out, die, and need charging. Even if it lasts days on a charge, its always when you need it that it dies. Then theres also considerations on the wireless transmitter/etc. I've seen plenty of those die before in other devices.
This just seems like an expensive toy that will garner rave reviews at first...millions will buy them...then millions will hate them later. Someone please stop Apple from trying to reinvent things that aren't broken. The R&D costs from things like this would be better spent elsewhere...like I dunno...a $1-2k non server processor based tower that is just as upgradeable?...or at least some new case designs
.
I have had this Logitech LX6 wireless mouse since last year, I use my computer a lot and of yet needed to replace the battery's (2 energizer battery's). For $30 bucks I was skeptical at first, but it has been a great mouse with clickable scroll wheel, and left and right buttons. Now Apple's Magic Mouse at $69 is priced to high for me. I can get a aftermarket keyboard and mouse combo for that price.

I think you're right about the proportions and layout. It looks full-size to me.
Personally, I prefer the conventional design myself, but I could probably live with the Al keyboards if I had to. I've been typing happily on my 9" netbook, and it hasn't impeded my typing speed one bit. Not the most comfortable thing to type on, but it's acceptable. The Al keyboard should be at least as acceptable.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
I tried the new mouse out at a local Best Buy a couple of days ago, and it worked pretty well. The gestures I tried worked well as did the left and right click. The response to the gestures was snappy. I think I'll keep my Logitech though as the shape didn't really fit my hand.
I didn't get to really put it through it's paces, but it worked better than I thought it would.

If the keyboard only supports USB 1.1, the unused port is less useful.

How smooth is the cursor movement? Is it up there with a good laser mouse?

It seemed alright for the few minutes I used it. But again I was more interested in the touch gestures and how they worked than with the action of the mouse. Nothing really jumped out at me as a glaring usability problem when I used it, except for how it fit my hand. It seems to work as advertised from my limited interaction. But again this was on a brand new demo machine, maybe it won't work so good in the wild on a machine loaded with stuff.
I think it's an interesting implementation of the touch technology, but I'm not giving up my laser mouse.

Another important benefit to a USB mouse is that it's very easy to locate when it gets knocked off your desk, 'cause it's still plugged into your computer. I used to have a wireless mouse, and you'd be amazed at how often the thing would slide off into some nook or cranny where I could not find it.

I used the Magic Mouse yesterday. It was nice, totally the opposite experience I had with the Mighty Mouse. I only used it for a few minutes though.

Re: Apple Releases Magic Mouse
I helped my folks order a new iMac, and it'll be here within 10 days, with the new Magic Mouse. Will report on my findings. We opted for a wired full-sized keyboard, it's enough that the magic mouse is bluetooth and operates on batteries, and one of my parents uses the numeric keypad regularly.

That's the sort of combination I consider from tim to time. My mouse cord snags in my rolltop desk and it have to spend some time unsnagging it a few times a day.

Just got mine.
It's fairly right on the sensitivity, and it's probably just a matter of getting used to it.
The top surface should have been mat like the trackpads IMO, for better gliding.
It's a bit wide and heavy to my taste, but that might be because of my previous mouse.
For now I'm pretty happy. Also; it's gorgeous.
