AEBS dead?

Its around a year and a half in age. I was all excited as I just received a 1TB drive for TM. I repaired all my other drives (just in case) and when I plugged them back into the hub I noticed that my AEBS's light was a solid amber. I could not get it to reset. Apple forums said a solid amber light meant it was dead. Well, I got it blinking amber which was good, even got it to show in Airport Utility (better, right?). However, each time I select "Manual set-up" or otherwise, it then can not establish a connection (I've tried every sort of restart, power on/off/combo////). Kind of sucks as this thing hasn't been abused too much, and being so rather new. My free Verizon wireless g has been bullet proof from day 1 and has been shoved under my desk. Can't say this AEBS has been all that reliable. It is flaky as hell after a power outage or if anything else weird is thrown at it. It then takes all kinds of "trickery" to get it to work.

This sucks as all my music and photos are stored externally! I will probably just get another AEBS since it is the easiest fix. May also drop this by my local Apple Store.

Re: AEBS dead?

Oh, the light is now just blinking and Airport Utility can't see it at all.

Re: AEBS dead?

How are you connecting to the Airport? An ethernet cable works best, if you need to muck around with it.

I don't understand why any of you use WiFi. Computers should be connected to the Internet and to each-other with cables like the Good Lord intended.

And not puny little spaghetti thread cables either. Massive 2 inch diameter coax cables.

Re: AEBS dead?

You know, I've heard my share of complaints about AE.  Is there really much advantage to it vs standard WiFi routers?

Thicker than thicknet?

Seriously, if you're trying to configure a wireless router, a temporary ethernet cable bypasses a lot of hassle. Then, when you've changed things to your liking, you can try connecting over 802.11 again, and remove the cable if you're successful.

I tried a direct connect via ethernet and my MBP still would not see it. Then, at some point last night, my AEBS light magically turned green and now Airport Utility sees it (keep in mind that my internet via my Verizon wireless router is working 100%). AU shows my external hard drives being connected in the AU app. but the drives do not show up in my side bar. Also, AU does not list my Airport Express as of lunch today. I'm going to do another hard reset to my AE when I get home and continue playing with it to see if that does it (need to create a WDS network for Airfoill so I can transmit Safari radio feeds to my home theater).

It seems that you have to perform a voodoo ceremony to get AEBS working when anything goes wrong.

And the advantage of an AEBS to me is the ability to print wirelessly, the pure n network, and corresponding ability to move large amounts of data wirelessly as fast as possible

You know... a minute or two of googling, and it's actually kinda shocking how many people make/sell computer voodoo dolls.

Re: AEBS dead?

Well, a hard reset and I got my AE recognized and configured. Now the only thing not working are my external hard drives will not mount.

Re: AEBS dead?

To be clear, the external hard drives show in the AU but when I then attempt to find them in my AEBS icon in the side bar, there is always a "connection error" of some sorts.

And yes, I could use one of those dolls.

*edit the disks was my fault easily corrected*

I also got Time Machine working now, and even though I initially backed up everything via a USB cord w/TM, it seems like it is backing up from scratch (82GB of data from my MBP). I hope it is not unknowing duplicating what I have already have done (I know it is so this is a redundant question). So I will probably have two back-up files and need to delete one?
