Why I'm annoyed about something that happened 1500 years ago

http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_ne … 334257.stm

The ancient Nazca people of Peru are famous for the lines they drew in the desert depicting strange animal forms.
A further mystery is what happened to this once great civilisation, which suddenly vanished 1,500 years ago.
Now a team of archaeologists have found the demise of the Nazca society was linked in part to the fate of a tree.
Analysing plant remains they reveal how the destruction of forests containing the huarango tree crossed a tipping point, causing ecological collapse.

An ancient society destroys its environment and promptly collapses. The end.

Or more precisely-- THE END. They environment they destroyed is still a wasteland. One of the pictures in the linked article shows an ancient irrigation canal perched above the level of the topsoil which blew away eons ago.

So why am I upset now, in the 21st century? Because while some people are trying to repair this sort of crap which has been going on forever, others just forge ahead. And not just the obvious suspects like strip mining operations and rain forest clearing. Indigenous people insist on the necessity of slaughtering endangered eagles and whales as part of their culture. The fact that Native Americans rationalize this behavior depresses me to no end.

But they're so much holier than the rest of us. Surely they would never do wrong?

As George Carlin said, we don't need to save Earth, we must save ourselves! Because after humans are gone, the planet will go on.

And that's no joke.

If only they had quit burning fossil fuels and eating meat they would be here today, someone should have warned them.

You're being sarcastic, but civilizations have frequently consumed themselves to death. Easter Island, for example, had a thriving culture on it until they chopped down all of their trees. This caused an environmental collapse that resulted in a starvation-induced die-off. There's no reason to believe that we're above such an end.

You're right, I am being sarcastic. I understand the relationship between humans staying alive and the environment surrounding them, but I have a problem with "experts" when they claim to know the exact reason something happened 1500 years ago.
This theory is "the definitive " one until someone else comes up with another theory. So the pollen density changed, we don't know if it was because they chopped all the trees down, that is an assumption. Maybe a disease ravaged the forrest or possibly something like the pine beetle killed them off. These experts know that the forrest went away but everything else is conjecture.
Then again, maybe the Nazca did chop all their trees down.

Conjecture?

Really, WTF?

Did they not gather evidence? Did they not supply data?

More like they made observations which strongly supported a hypothesis.
Quite a bit more substantial that a mere "conjecture".

Other than proving that the forrest disappeared, where did they state the proof that humans chopped all of the trees down?

Analysing plant remains and pollen in soil 1.5m deep, the team was able to trace an important sequence of events which show the clearing of woodland for agriculture.

"At the bottom of the profile there is a lot of huarango pollen and little evidence of human impact," explains Dr Alex Chepstow-Lusty from the French Institute of Andean Studies in Lima, Peru who also took part in the study.

"Then, at 80cm deep, maize pollen becomes common, showing the importance of this crop, suggesting a greater need for food and an increasing population," he says.

"It is now we notice a big impact on the huarangos and a major decrease in their pollen."

That's a complete myth, fostered by the culture (white Europeans) who actually did decimate Easter Island. It was the genocidal slave trade which destroyed their civilization.

Their civilization was ravaged by war and political struggle well before the slavers came. Also, the slavers were South American, not European.

Re: Why I'm annoyed about something that happened 1500 years ago

I read an article somewhere which asserted that European were, in fact, among the guilty parties. I wish I could remember where I found it. War and political struggle aren't the same as chopping down every tree and killing every animal. There is strong evidence that the few surviving Easter-Islanders were willing to go along with the bogus story that their own people were responsible for the decimation because they no-longer knew their own history, were rewarded for making statements which supported the false history, and punished for saying things which contradicted it.

Well, I read a Book that said the Easter Islanders destroyed themselves.

Lots of books are based on "received wisdom," and are therefore mistaken.

This specific book is actually well researched, so either attack the specific book or STFU.

I'm not going to attack the book. I've heard the guy interviewed on NPR. I've read articles about his work in scientific publications. He's cool. I like him. Easter Island is just one of the civilizations his book deals with. I'm sure most of his book is correct.

But like I said, much of the received wisdom is wrong. There are plenty of very good books, for example, which will tell you the Egyptians built the great pyramid. They're wrong.
