Bought a new Toshiba Satallite for work
Being under a budget limit, and being that I needed a laptop for my new consulting position, I compromised from the low I had hoped to work under. Instead of getting an aluminum body MacBook (refurbished) for $900, I gave in to my spooses demand for a cheaper laptop. I went to Best Buy and picked up a Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 with Windows 7 Home Premium.
The hardware is sufficient for what I will be doing with it. I loaded Thunderbird and Open Office on it, not going to spend for MS Office. And a few utilities that I need. It's ok. Not what I wanted but it will work.
What I truly hate is the Windows 7 GUI. The Windows explorer is dumbed down and cluttered with the "Libraries". Why do I need two new levels of hierarchy to get to my document files?
More eye candy, and less functionality at your finger tips. For me, it's just another example of why Microsoft misses the point. They fixed what didn't need fixing.

I like the idea of Libraries, because at work I have several locations for documents (local computer, home drive, various shared drives, etc etc) and it unifies all that, but at home I agree it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. However, you can turn off libraries in the sidebar.
The best and most wonderful thing about Windows 7 is the new taskbar. It cleans up the massive number of windows I usually have open. Live previews, jump lists... I think it's the single best improvement to Windows 7, period.

Yeah, the first thing I do with a Vista machine is make it work like XP, or as close to it as I can.

My company gave me a Toshiba Satellite when I was hired. First thing I did was wipe XP and installed Ubuntu. A few months later, Ubuntu and I were having a little lovers' spat, so I decided to go back to XP. Unfortunately, nobody had ever given me the Toshiba OEM install disks. I learned the hard way that a Brand-New-Paid-For copy of Windows XP won't work on a Toshiba Satellite -- too many stupid proprietary drivers. No sound, no fancy buttons on the keyboard, etc. After a day of fighting with XP and Toshiba's obtuse drivers website, I quit on XP again. Popped in my Ubuntu Live CD, made a fresh install which worked perfectly, and never looked back again.
It amazes me that a free, open source OS can work wonderfully out of the box when XP completely failed. Ain't corporate Intellectual Property grand?

I made the backup disks for the system and the applications. I know about proprietary stuff. And I don't like it.
