Image scaling
Far too often, people post hugely wide images in threads. These create a huge annoyance: pages should be made to display correctly on a 1024x768 (or even 800x600) screen. A simple profile option wherein users could set the maximum width to which images in posts will be scaled would be just fine.
Could this be done? I know a lot of us would love to have this.

Re: Image scaling
Seldom do I see a need to post an inline pic larger than 450px on it's longest side. I'd hope that people can police themselves, and I think for the most part they do. How often does someone post a really wide pic?

Re: Image scaling
There are a few threads right now in Teens with Macs that are rendered completely unreadable by wide pictures. I don't know about the rest of the forums, though.

Re: Image scaling
I know, but many disobey that.
Perhaps an announcement about images like that would put people straight.

OK, we'll put up some guidelines. Perhaps GUI will add a hack to enforce it sometime. You can always turn off in-line images if you wish also.
Another solution would be to avoid TWM altogether.

Re: Image scaling
please just make a mod to do it... otherwise you end up with screenshots being shrunk to unreadable sizes for everyone....

Re: Image scaling
You could have the boards check the width of the image being posted; if it's wider than 450px, just output a width="450" attribute along with the rest of the <img> tag. The browser will automagically adjust the height of the image to remain in proportion with the resized image.

Re: Image scaling
That's true, but if we implement that everybody gets their wait doubled to load the page. The server loads it once while waiting to see how big the picture is. <wait> <wait> OK, its small enough. Now finally really send the forum page to the person that requested it originally. Oh, he's not there? He went somewhere else before getting as old and grey as I while waiting for the page to load? What a shame!

Re: Image scaling
Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of checking the image size right as it's posted. That way the width attribute could be snuck into the BBCode [img] tag so that it gets output as part of the HTML <img> tag without any processing having been done when the page is accessed.

Perhaps then, a link to the image would be proper netiquette. Either crop the screenshots to show the important part, or post a link to the image.
The inline pics are nice, and they do have their purpose, but we should all be careful and respectful enough not to know when the url tag is more appropriate than the img tag.
