macs for babies

I'm giving my 3yo an old SE/30.
Anyone know how I can get it set up for him.
What OS will it run best? (i got on board w/7.5 so don't know sys 6)
download stuff (where) on my machine then network them?
Any good playware for a 3yo?
Thanx

Re: macs for babies

3 year olds like color, so you might try digging up an all-in-one performa (575 or similar.) But since you're giving them an SE/30, I have two suggestions.

1) liquid nail it to the desk

2) email me (dvpierce-at-yahoo.com) and I'll email you all of the system 6 games (shareware... relax mods) I still have lying around. My dad got a couple CD-ROMs worth of shareware to go with his $600 2x CD-ROM drive back in the day. He had an SE with a radius 68030 upgrad and I had a Mac Plus. Some of the shareware may be more interesting to you (RoboWars) but Iago and Checkers are timeless classics that any kindergarten or advanced preschooler can probably kick my butt at. smile

I would recommend System 6 for raw simplicity reasons, as well as easy fixin' (six words - system folder backup on a floppy), although if you use System 7.1 or 7.5, you can install At Ease for the little tike.

I started with computers when I was 5, but Commodore 64s are a lot different. I really didn't 'get' the whole GUI thing untill I was 8 or 9, but I think an old mac makes a great 'training' computer, either way.

ps - buy a keyboard guard. You know, one of those plastic jobs that libvraries use.
