slow ethernet!!!!

I've just put a 10/100 autosensing switch into my network (replacing an old 10 baseT hub) all the G4's can send data quickly and I can retrieve data quickly from our 9500(ISDN server)  but when we send data to the 9500 it is dead slow(less than 2k per sec). The minute I swapped back to the old hub, it was fine again. Any ideas? Will I need to install a newer ethernet card on the 9500?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Re: slow ethernet!!!!

I'm not sure what the problem is, but as a possible temporary solution, you could try connecting the 9500 to the 10baset hub and then use an uplink port or crossover cable to connect the hub to the switch.

I had to do that for a while when we replaced our first 10bt hub with a 10/100 autosensing hub. The NIC in our router (a unix on macintosh system) did not work with the autosensing hub at all.

We have since replaced the autosensing hub and the router.

Re: slow ethernet!!!!

This is a classic case of a speed and/or duplex mismatch.  While ethernet speed/duplex autonegotiation is a nice concept, the reality is that it frequently doesn't work.  In theory, forcing one device to the least common denominator of 10 Mbit and half-duplex should always work if autonegotiation doesn't, sometimes even that fails.  Trial and error is about the most useful tool in this case.  Putting some other device (a hub or switch) between the existing switch and Mac is a common and very useful workaround, but you could also try forcing the speed and duplex of the switch port the Mac is plugged into, assuming your switch supports that feature.  Apple has an unsupported tool on their web site that can be used to force the speed and duplex on some older Macs, but I don't know if it'll work on your 9500.  Do a search for "ethernet speed duplex" in their Knowledge Base and you should find it.

Good luck!
