Can OS X still use fonts from the OS 9 System Folder?
Our publishing company is in the process of switching to OS X. We have a bunch of fonts we've used mostly in OS 9. Can I simply drag/copy most of these fonts out of the OS 9 Fonts folder and into OS X's Fonts folder and have them still work in our OS X native applications like Photoshop 7 and Illustrator 10?

A stock install of OS X on a drive already containing an OS 9 folder or partition should see and use any fonts in the preexisting OS 9 Fonts folder.

That's curious. I dropped a Hebrew font in my OS 9 Font folder and when in X nothing can use it. Are there limitations on what types of fonts OS X can see?

silly question, but is the Hebrew language kit installed? I forwent all the extra languages when i did my OS X install to save space, but the default is to install 'em all.

Wow, sorry to hear about a wipe out. If you didn't do anything special in regards to the language kits when you installed, then it's probably safe to assume you have the Hebrew kit. The default install adds all the lang. kits. I had to work through I dialog box to prevent the other kits from being installed.
I've had problems accessing fonts in Classic OS 9 app.s in OS X and in OS 9, but that's just the standard doofy stuff that ATM and OS 9 put us through. I believe the workaround for that was to place the font, or an alias of the font in the System Folder> Application Support > Adobe > Fonts folder. Try that, as well as placing a copy or alias of the font in OS X' System > Library > Fonts folder as well. Shooting in the dark here.
In general, OS X' font situation is an improvement, for me. I couldn't get OS 9 to recognize a font a designer sent me for use in a Flash project. Using Flash MX in OS X I could use the font, but no tricks whatsoever could make the font load in OS 9 and Flash 5.

Wow, sorry to hear about a wipe out...
The "wipe out" is due to the errant way I partitioned my 100 GB HD as explained in the the below "Changing Partition Sizes in OS X" thread.

I think the easiest solution is backing up and starting over.
However, before I completely whack my system, I give your alias suggestions a try to see if that works.
Edit: Four edits later and I STILL can't get the stupid BBCode to display my URL link correctly! So I just pasted it plain. I guess I need to search the "Forum" forum for advice on linking to other threads.

Thanks for the help everyone, I didn't realize that OS X read fonts directly out of the OS 9 Fonts folder also. I use it at home, but using OS X in a working business environment is a first for me.

Hello, Yes you have to drag the fonts to your user library fonts folder in X and they will work fine.

Actually, you don't have to drag them anywhere - you can leave them where they are. Here's a low-down on the OS X font situation:
If your font is installed in the:
OS 9 Font folder (inside the System folder) - any OS X app AND OS 9 app can use it (even in Classic).
OS X Library Fonts folder (root level of your hard drive) - any OS X app can use it. OS 9 apps cannot use it.
OS X User Library Fonts folder (username/Library) - any OS X app can use it for the current user that is logged in. OS 9 apps cannot use it.
