GEM was better. It was more like the Mac OS. That's why Apple sued them. And sued them again. And again. It is still a 'nicer' to use OS than Windows (FreeGEM is cool

I used GEM on my second computer: an Amstrad PC. I thought it was really awesome until i joined the newspaper staff at my high school and saw my first Mac - a Mac Classic with PageMaker and a StyleWriter.
I've never been the same since.

Probably none, but, just like it's always been, there were IBM compatible clones running Windows, and it was all cheap and available anywhere, unlike Apple's more expensive and almost wholly proprietary Macs.

well i'm pretty sure that none did since windows wasn't released untill 1989. however that said, windows 1.01 is the fugliest OS i have ever seen.

Windows didn't start to get decent until Win 3.1 and wasn't good until Windows NT 3.51. Not that Windows 3.51 was good, but it was the first pre-emptive multithreaded version of windows with protected memory.

Windows 286 is about where I really came in. At least that was when I started dabbling with writing windows software, which was a major nightmare back then.
These days I can't see myself using anything other than Windows 2000. Which MS has stated they'll stop supporting in 2005. So either LongHorn will be decent or I'll be going somewhere else.

I've often wondered what things would be like today if Apple had moved to the IBM all those years ago and took MS on directly in the compatible market.
They obviously had the better operating system.
Would we all be running 'Apple Windows' today? Or would they have still screwed it up?
Interesting thing to think about.

Sure. The UI at least was consistent and with the release of the 386 performance wasn't bad.
The much hated 'registry' wasn't the monolithic entity it is today. You could actually tweak the OS using 2 text files, windows.ini and system.ini.
It wasn't bad. I was mostly an OS/2 guy around that time though. OS/2 was da bomb. Too bad IBM screwed that up.

He's referring to the window's we use in our houses. The glass making technique became much better when they moved to the 3.1 sand burning technique. Crystal clear.
