Nekromantix

This is really more of a rave, than a rant.

I was at Borders today (yes, I am a slave to evil giant capitalist empirical masters), looking to spend some of my birthday money, and picked up the Return of the Loving Dead CD by Danish rockers Nekromantix.  It is a downright incredible album, probably the best I've purchased since Queens of the Stone Age's Songs for the Deaf.

If you've never heard of Nekromantix (which is likely), the best way to describe their music would be a head on collision between the Stray Cats and a truckload of 1950's horror film reels.  In other words, it's rockabilly (or more appropriately, psychobilly, thanks to the strong punk infusion) with a tongue-in-cheek horror theme applied.

Bottom line, this is a downright incredible album.  If you like punk, rockabilly, the Stray Cats, Brian Setzer, Reverend Horton Heat, or celebrating on Halloween night, you should buy this album.  Remember: Return of the Loving Dead by Nekromantix.  Best damn rock album I've heard in a long time.

But it!

NOW!

Re: Nekromantix

Pretty cool.

I can only take so much rock-a-billy though, even if it is punk-ish with a cool theme.

I watched the video, it was pretty funny.

Personally, I could live on rockabilly/psychobilly/punkabilly, but there are so few really good bands out there playing it that I nearly die whenever I find a new one.  I can't believe it took me a year to find these guys, though.

Re: Nekromantix

And I might add that I knew right were I was when I clicked that link. Epitath has a A LOT of good bands.

I hear ya about taking so long to find bands. I just recently discovered Punk and it's nearly taken over my listening habits. At least that means that I've got a LOT of good stuff to listen to as there is a HUGE backlog of good punk. I'm finding bands that are new to me that have 13 albums in the bag.

Re: Nekromantix

i sorta know this metalhead...

he has a [got metal?] sticker, and he is rather cool and openminded...

so we got to talking about the whole universal/apple thing not a thing, thing.

and then he whipped out Hatebreed on me, that was the about the goddamned hardest thing i have EVER heard... perhaps UMG isn't totally evil afterall.

and then he hit me with Cradle of Filth... that was not so good - sorta sounds like the above? maybe, more theatrical though. i mean, i liked goth back in the day, but...

guilty musical pleasure: The Dandy Warhols

TG: anything Mike Ness / Social D!

Re: Nekromantix

I wasn't too impressed with the Hatebreed album.  It was deep, dark, hard speed-core, but eh...it was pretty boring on the whole.  Didn't really charge me, you know.  Listening to it one song at a time works fine, but the sound was just so homongenous across the album.  Still a good album though.  For downright painfully hard, I tend to prefer Slipknot or Mudvayne.  Technically, neither are as hard or forceful as Hatebreed, but there's something there that appeals to me more.  Maybe the complexity of the composition and arrangements (especially Mudvayne).

Cradle of Filth kind of bites, though.  Nothing like Nekromantix, if that's what you're referring to.  Nekromantix has a kitsch horror theme which Kim Nekroman uses to blend satire, humor, and in your face fun; definitely not a goth band or anything like that.  Cradle of Flith is ok, but generic speed metal, not worthy of comparison to Nekromantix.  Nekromantix is psychobilly-basically a splinter of punk that has been inspired by rockabilly, swing, jazz, and classic (12-bar) blues.  Tiger Army, Reverend Horton Heat, and Nekromantix are probably the best psychobilly bands around.  Reverend Horton Heat pretty much invented the style, but he/they are often more straightforward rockabilly than psychobilly punk, and I'd be stupid to ignore the Cramps and their influence on psychobilly as pioneers of the style as well.

And I love Social Distortion.  I'd rather have the Ramones over Social Distortion, The Clash over the Ramones, and half the time Rancid over The Clash.  I'm just contemporary like that.

Re: Nekromantix

Nice!!

I will get this tomorrow!

May I suggest my new found favorite, The Distillers?

I would say Joan Jett meets The Offspring(but less commercial)...

For the youngsters searching for Horror Punk get The Misfits (the old stuff from the Danzig Days) or Samhain...

Re: Nekromantix

Murderdolls are also good if you're looking for Hollywood-inspired horror kitsch themes, and humorously offensive and violent songs, but wrapped up in a speed metal/thrash/punk package.  How can you go wrong with songs like Die My Bride, Graverobbing U.S.A., Let's Go To War, and Kill Miss America?

Re: Nekromantix

Distillers are an incredible band.  If No Doubt was hardcore punk and not all commercial, this is sort of what you'd get, because Brody (who is, unfortunately married to Tim Armstrong of Rancid/Transplants) is super hot with her mohawk, plaid bondage pants, and steel-toed boots.  She's sexy, really.  Killer voice that ranges from melodic drawl, to raging growl, to psychotic scream.  She's beautiful, and the album is hard, honest, and emotionally raw.

I bought that damn album (Sing Sing Death House) the day it showed up at the local Borders.

Re: Nekromantix

And for what it's worth, Transplants are on Jimmy Kimmel live later tonight (April 16th) in about 20 minutes, I'm guessing, so anyone with a TV and a love for punk should turn it to ABC.

Re: Nekromantix

And another note, I saw a killer Misfits boxed set when I went to Borders and picked up the Nekromantix CD.  I didn't have the $68 (or thereabouts) they were charging for it, though.  It comes in a cool coffin shaped box.

Re: Nekromantix

Yow!  Transplants just played on Jimmy Kimmel, and it was, for lack of a better term, the sickest, most dope thing I've ever seen on TV.  Hot damn.  Maybe he'll let them play another song.

Tall Cans In The Air!!!  Or even Diamonds and Guns...whatever.  Just rock my punk ass.

Re: Nekromantix

Rancid had an album titled And Out Come the Wolves... from 1994.  You might just be confusing some other band with that album, or something.  I honestly cannot think of any hardcore punk band which has come out of Australia.  Hardcore punk is a mostly American and European invention, and it remains that way to this day.  But I could be wrong.  I don't know everything (yet).

Guttermouth.  They're cool.  They do the wise-ass SoCal punk stuff like Blink-182 without being immature and irritating about it (as evidenced by the fact that I like Guttermouth and don't want to kill them in a very bloody fashion with a chainsaw).  Thank goodness Travis left Blink-182 and got in the Transplants.  He was the only cool person in that poppy crapfest excuse for a punk band.

Now listen to Nekromantix.  And Turbonegro.  And Death By Stereo.  And anything else from Epitaph.  Then go to www.roadrunnerrecords.com and get yourself metalfied.  I suggest Chimaira, Machine Head, and Karma to Burn.

Then you die.

Re: Nekromantix

lol

i had to scroll down just to see:

Then you die.

haha, yes - seriously though,

my ears have been detecting some good "metal" lately.  like older mudvayne.  you'll understand much when i say i REALLY like the 'postpunk/posthardcore" (i know) Helmet and Quicksand sound.  now it's Tool...

will check out Kimmel... not on yet here on the left coast?  i think my local channel tape delays it (goddamn smurfing conservatives!)

think that mike ness project was the 'mescaleros" with setzer, may only be local to LA though?!?!?

anywho, thanks for the suggesitons

i am going to go die for like 6.5 hrs

you die first
