Deaded Powerbook
Does anyone know what to do with a PowerBook 5300cs with a dead starter circuit, a broken power adapter, a dull screen, a battery that lasts for 20 minutes and an unreliable trackpad?
I'd like to get it fixed, but it might be cheaper to buy an iBook ...

Re: Deaded Powerbook
rip it apart, sell the good parts on eBay, and get an iBook with your new cash.
iMac: 500MHz G3, headless mod, 20GB main, 60GB media, 320MB RAM, Tiger (server)
MacBook Pro: 2.5GHz C2D, 250GB (160 for OS X, 60 for Vista, 15 for Ubuntu), 4GB RAM, Leopard (main)
20GB 4G iPod, Apple OS

Re: Deaded Powerbook
Anybody know how to fix a sticky command key on a 5300?
It took me forever to figure out how why I couldn't type anything on this girls 5300. All it ever wanted to do was quit, save, close window, find, etc. I felt very stupid afterwards.

Re: Deaded Powerbook
I'm not absolutely certain about this, but the best way should be to prise off the key cap with a knife or something and then clean out all the congealed dust and stuff (which is probably what's causing the malfunction). I used to have a PB190, which is pretty similar, and I had a sticky T key. Prising the key cap off worked that time.

Re: Deaded Powerbook
I'm not sure what you you mean by "dead starter circuit". Most of the other issues can be resolved by limiting it to desktop use. Get a PB video to VGA cable for twenty bucks and plug in a 15 inch monitor. Then you can have decent video at 800 by 600. Plug an ADB keyboard and mouse into the ADB port and you're running pretty well. An external SCSI CD is another nice add-on. You can run office 98 or Appleworks from system 8.6 or 7.5.5. A ethernet/modem PCMIA card for connectivity is the final piece

Re: Deaded Powerbook
Howdy,
I'm not sure what is wrong witht he 5300 I just inherited from a friend. It works fine when plugged in, and it seems like it charged it's battery fine -- but it can't seem to work off the battery at all. If you unplug it while it is on, it dies. If you try to start it up without the powercord plugged in, you get nothing.
It's PRAM seems to be fine - no issues there.
Any thoughts?
Cheers,

Re: Deaded Powerbook
What model ethernet card do you have? I just heard on the NewtonTalk list about someone who was selling a bunch of ethernet dongles.
