Re: all files same size (97k) Downloaded or copied over network

How old is your Mac?  The older HFS file system didn't scale well.  As hard drives got bigger the minimum block size creeped upwards as well.  Back in the days of the Mac Classic, a block size was 4 K on a 80 MB hard drive.  As drives approaced 2 GB that minimum block size grew to 64 K and larger.

HFS+ fixed that problem.  All block sizes are 4K.  The directory grows larger as the hard drives get bigger.

If you can reformat your hard drive and break it into multiple partitions, your minimum block size will shrink down to something less wasteful.

A B&W G3 will not boot from an HFS+ partition.  You must format at least one partition using HFS and boot from there.  That said, I'd just break your drive into multiple HFS partitions.  I don't know of any software that will let you mix HFS and HFS+ partitions on one drive.

Re: all files same size (97k) Downloaded or copied over network

HFS and HFS+ are Apple's two hard drive formatting standards.  Older Macs use HFS.  Newer Macs use HFS+.  Its got nothing to do with the operating system.   However since both the hard drive formatting method and the MacOS have been developed concurrently, its possible to draw some relationships.

All Macs with MacOS 8.1 and below used HFS formatting on their drives.  Macs with MacOS 8.5 through X can use either HFS or HFS+.  However G3 and older Macs cannot boot from HFS+ formatted drives.  G4 Macs that came with MacOS X installed at the factory use HFS+ formatted drives exclusively.

You can certainly go to MacOS X.  However you must not reformat your drive in HFS+.  Stick with a couple HFS partitions and all will be well.

A BW G3 certainly CAN boot off a HFS+ formated HD.
If my Biege G3 can a BW can too. Heck I had a PM 6500/250 running off a HFS+ drive. All you need is to have OS8 or newer and HFS+ works fine.

I said boot from not just use.  Sure, they can view and manipulate data files on HFS+ drives.  However they cannot boot from a system folder thereon.

I hate to contradict but I BOOT my 6500/250, and my G3266 off an HFS+ formated drive. I only have one drive set to one partition each in both machines. Im afraid your mistaken on this point. I do seem to recall something about 68K machines not being able to boot off HFS+ even if running 8.1 but Im not sure about that, time to blow the dust off my LC 580 to test this theory.

But  can declare with absolute certainty that ANY PPC mac running 8.1 or newer can boot off of an HFS+ drive. The G3 266 on which I am typing this post is booted from an HFS+ drive. I doubled checked Apple system profiler before I posted this so I am confedent I am correct.

Yeah, I definitely had a Performa 6360 booting off of HFS+. And my iBook had HFS and HFS+ partitions (as well as ext2) all at the same time...

A search of Apple's site shows that you are correct.  HFS+ kicked in for MacOS 8.1.  See article 24319
