Views Column?
I was curious if getting rid of the "Views" column is possible? Wanted?
I don't remember if it was on the old forums (I don't think it was). I have yet to see a purpose for it, other than to be misleading in a thread's popularity since replies to the thread is really only what counts (and who replies to the thread too).
I've seen more threads that have only 20 replies, and yet 200+ views. You can say that it's because the thread is being read by 200+ people - but that's not true. I personally go back to threads and use them as reference for something else (that pumps the view count), or I'll read a thread multiple times as different people post. I know I can't be the only one doing these things so it is possible that many of the threads with lots of views are just 5 or 6 people keeping tabs on the thread and reading the most recent reply to it - Seems to make the whole "Views" thing kind of pointless and misleading.
If it worked off of a different calculation, that would be dandy - Say only counting new hits ..ie.. people who are reading it for the first time... But I don't think that's possible (could be wrong) or feasable (sounds like it'd be ALOT of work for very little even if it can be done).
It's more curiousity than anything. It's nothing of dire need... and I can't see anyone going insaine if it stays. I just can't understand why it's there or how it's supposed to be usefull...

Re: Views Column?
That makes sense. I also read posts over again to see what different people's responses are. I'm sure other people do as well. Would it be possible to make that "unique views?"

Re: Views Column?
Yeah, it would be nearly impossible to keep track of unique guest views since that would entail an absolutely massive database (think of each IP accessing each topic). It could possibly be feasible to keep track of unique topic views of registered members, but it would be rather inaccurate (only members would be counted) and it would likewise require a rather large databse to keep track of what topics each member has viewed.
Hard work may not kill you, but why take chances?

Yeah, that's kinda what I suspected. It's not something most people probably pay much attention to anyway, and doesn't warrant the extra effort. It was a nice thought though.

Re: Views Column?
Yea... I kind of figured unique views wouldn't be feasable even if theoretically possible. But due to the fact that they aren't unique views, that's why I always wonder why the Views column is there in the first place. Definitly wouldn't miss it if it vanished
Doesn't bother me seeing it either tho..
So all good
Thanky!

Re: Views Column?
The views column lets me know if people have read my thread and not replied, therefore letting me know if anyone cares/knows a solution.
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.
