Awesome UNIX Tutorials for Beginners
I just found an awesome (and free) online course on UNIX. If you want to get started with UNIX, or know someone else who does, I highly recommend "UNIX Tutorials for Beginners"
It's written for tcsh, the default "dialect" for Mac OS X's Terminal.

FWIW, the linux documentation project has lots of howtos that, while they don't specifically apply to OS X, are helpful.

Re: Awesome UNIX Tutorials for Beginners
I have found a few good ones. This site covers a lot of general UNIX command line stuff:
http://cs.atu.edu/~morell/workshop.html
These two are pretty obvious, but I find the FAQ and man pages on these sites sometimes have more info or are more clearly presented than the man pages in OS X:
http://www.openbsd.org
http://www.freebsd.org
These sites deal with ipfw and a bit with sysctl. Good if you want to configure the firewall or tweak you TCP stack:
http://www.freebsd-howto.com/HOWTO/Ipfw-HOWTO
http://www.freebsd-howto.com/HOWTO/Ipfw … ment-HOWTO
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO885 … walls.html

This is a really good rundown of what root is and how *nix type multi-user systems, such as OS X, work. (as seen in this slashdot article)

As helpful as the links are, I'm of the old school: I want a book! So whats the favorite book for a command line newbie?

I hear that! My favourite OS X book so far is Mac OS X Unleashed. I have the first edition and it has 900 or so pages devoted to the UNIX and CLI stuff lurking beneath the surface of OS X. I have not read Mac OS X in a Nutshell but if it is as good as O'Reilly's other Nutshell books it should be very good. I have a copy of Linux in a Nutshell and I found it helpful when I began exploratory surgery on OS X. I suspect books on various BSD UNIX variants would provide some useful info - I know I have found lots of useful stuff on FreeBSD and OpenBSD related websites. If I am having trouble trying to figure out how or why something works (or doesn't) with Darwin/OS X, I often find it helpful to look at how other UNIX variants work; sometimes the different perspective makes things more clear.
Another URL with useful OS X info is:

Re: Awesome UNIX Tutorials for Beginners
The Sams (im assuming is the sams books) books have always been the most informative and well presented tutorials, not only for OS X but for languages such as C++, Java and PHP.
Im looking at getting some books on OS X as i have to accelerate my terminal use twofold to catch up with everyone else.
any suggestions apart from the Sams stuff, peoples favs and what not....

Thanks macskeeball. You rock!
This is exactly what I was looking for. I was about to purchase a book that was as thick as the Houston phone book.

I've been using O'Reilly's "Learning UNIX for Mac OS X", so far it's pretty good.
Here is the Amazon link with more info & reader comments

yeah, ive been working my way through that. there was one bit where it recommended doing something in vi before it had told you how to use vi, but other than that its been fantastic. well explained, without treating you like an idiot, and actually funny too.
The previous disinformation was incorrect. Here is the correct disinformation.
