MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

OK, here's the deal. My friend wants to get a MP3 player but not sure whether to get an actual MP3 player or a MiniDisc player. Ideally he would want an MP3 player that is compatible with Mac(but he he can't afford an iPod so that's out of the question ). He also want s to know if MiniDisc players are compatible with Mac.

If you have any opinions, he'd like to hear them.

Thanks in advance,
Bonka

Re: MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

As far as I know, the minidisc players that connect via USB aren't compatible.  You can still record via the sound input port at 1x speed though...  But if you want to record in super extended mode, it's gonna take a while!

Now, I have no idea whether it would work via VirtualPC or anything...

Apple's iTunes page has a list of supported players.

The big problem I have with MiniDisc is that you can only transfer audio files to your computer through an analog connection.

I would rather cough up a few bucks more and get a $199 reconditioned iPod off Apple's specials section at the AppleStore.  Seriously, throw that analog cable away and get that 1394 digination.  Rock on like Jim Adkins.

I agree. An iPod is the best mp3 player out there. Remember that it is the only mp3 player (that I know of) that has FireWire. You pay premium for speed. And trust me, an iPod is very fast.

Re: MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

Ipods are very awesome but I'm gonna say go with an MD. It really depends what you want. I have an Sony MD which I love to no end. I use it all the time with my g4 powerbook. I love the discs since i can burn them thousands or hundreds of times without losing quality. They're also cool as hell to look at. All my friends are in love with it. And if you really want to you can get an MD receiver. They make a few on the US market and a smurfload in Japan.

It really depends on how you'll use it. I have a stereo from Japan with MD, my MR2 has an md receiver (Blaupunkt), and I use them all the time. Also, you can get an MD external drive which works pretty much like a CD burner, i know you can order them from japan and i think ive seen them in crutchfield.

happy hunting

Re: MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

go with an mp3/cd player.. just make sure you get one capable of VBR. you might find one rather cheap, but some are quite expensive ( $60-$120  eek )

Re: MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

It's annoying that the new range of NetMDs don't have mac support. Still, I'm quite happy with my minidisc player. It's somewhat irrelevant on this forum, but one of the biggest assets is you don't need a computer to use it. More relevant, you don't need a computer with firewire.

Re: MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

How much do mini disk players cost?  The one's I've seen (although in passing as I am not interested in them so there may be less expensive ones) were in the $150-200 range.  Also, how much does each disk hold?

For that price I'd go with a used iPod.  I paid $150 for mine used from a friend that upgraded to the 20GB model.

Re: MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

I can never remember how many megabytes a minidisc holds, but they fit 74 minutes at normal compression (there are 80 min discs also, and maybe more). You can fit two of four times that amount with long play modes, but  wouldn't use them unless quality isn't important.
And those prices sound more or less normal. The fancy ones run higher.

Alrighty then.  If the original poster says that the friend can not afford an iPod then a minidisk player is also straight out?  A Rio is a nice less expensive option but you can only fit about 10 songs at decent quality on them.  If you can deal with that then go for it.  I would just save my cash up and wait until I could afford the iPod, its worth it.

Oh, and I was kidding about the 'k' thing.

Re: MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

Thanks for all the replies, everyone!

Now, about the 'no iPod thing'. Ipods are REALLY expensive where I live..I don't know why, they just are. We are talking about $400 dollars CANADIAN for the 5 gig model, so yeah, mp3 players other than iPod are cheaper.

Personally, i think he should save up and get an iPod, They are clearly the best.

Ummm... That was a proposed tax. AFAIK they never went ahead with it...

The reason an iPod is relatively expensive is becuase of the exchange rate. A new 5 GB model is $300 US which works out (with present exchange rate) to about $470 Canadian. Add in 7% GST plus whatever your Province's PST is (nothing here in Alberta, but Bonka [in BC] would be paying about a total of 14% in tax tongue) and you end up with a bunch o' cash spent on that 5 GB of music smile

Apple's prices really aren't that far off the US prices. A 5GB at the Canadian Apple Store goes for $479. It's just the exchange screwing you over. mad

Re: MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

You guys all talk about buy a reconditioned ipod and how you should get it because it is only $200.  Well where can I get it at.  I look on apple's website and there is no area for special deals, because I don't even think they have that deal anymore.  If someone could please tell me how to get a reconditioned ipod for $200 I would be very thankful, I would much rather have the ipod, but for $300 its not worth it to me.

Re: MP3 player or Mini Disc player...

The special ran out, but may still be around some Apple Retail store.  But mind you knowing that MacWorld is coming around, and the special is only to sell overstocked iPod that will be obsolete, don't ya know!?

Yeah, I know. I was just grumpy that day.
A lower end minidisc will still give you all the features you need (except for the fast computer connection, of course) for a lot cheaper than a new iPod. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. My MD unit was cutting edge around 2 years ago, meaning it has adequate features and performance, and an incredibly tiny form factor for its time.
